Roderick Cavaliero is a conspicuously self-conscious belletrist, not at all bashful in demonstrating his formidable cultural compass and highly cultivated idiolect in this, his "Ottomania". Unfortunately, esotericism exercised by an overmighty intellect all too often becomes an object in itself, as it indeed seems to have done here. A prodigious mind in spate issues not only an indomitable flood of genius, but also turbid eddies and backwaters, so that the attendant, rather obsessive writing that may ensue becomes involute, and often retrogressive. Such erudite but cloying prose, adorned with a constellation of verbal bibelots, is understandably an editor's nightmare: small wonder that from page to page Mozart's "Die Entführing [sic] aus dem Serail" metamorphoses into the "Enftührung" [sic]. There is much of interest in this book, but the reader must be able to tolerate stratospheric literary exhibitionism.
