Game Changers: Twelve Elections That Transformed California, by Steve Swatt, Susie Swatt, Rebecca LaVally, Jeff Raimundo

Winner of the 2014 California Historical Society Book Award

The latest CHS Book Award winner examines California's history through the prism of twelve elections that forever changed the state. Drawing from a wealth of primary sources, including new interviews conducted by the authors, each chapter explores one election (Leland Stanford's gubernatorial race, the initiative that mandated term limits, and the Los Angeles Aqueduct Bond Measure, to name a few), revealing the forces behind the choices made at the polls and the consequences that carry over to this day. The authors offer thought-provoking interpretation rooted in decades of experience in journalism, public-policy analysis, and political consulting at the state Capitol. Through their perspectives we better understand the intricate game played in Sacramento by contenders such as the bespectacled and brilliant progressive reformer Hiram Johnson, iconoclastic muckraker-turned-candidate Upton Sinclair, and Proposition 13 author Howard Jarvis, with his zealous oratory and machete approach to tax reform. By focusing on elections, the authors show that Californians' voices are as powerful and transformative as the tectonic forces beneath us.

Review
“Highly entertaining and scrupulously researched.” --Ed Goldman, Sacramento Business Journal

“The book is full of characters that a fiction writer would be envious of creating, tales of machinations and anecdotes that liven the storytelling. Extensive research and interviews with participants involved in the more modern elections enrich the telling.” --Fox&Hounds

“A well-researched and thoroughly engaging source for understanding Sacramento's continuing gridlock, the ballot initiative system, and (sadly) the negative political campaigns still with us.” --Jeff Harter, Blue Heron

“This simply is an excellent book an excellent idea, excellently executed. It's compelling, easy reading without airs, telling the pertinent political stories that shaped California.” --George Skelton, political columnist for the Los Angeles Times

“A fascinating account of California's political history as viewed through the prism of critical elections from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present....Events and an array of interesting characters spring to life in these pages.” --Jack Citrin, professor of political science and director of the Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California, Berkeley

“A compelling analysis of the effect of voting and voters on framing the good, the bad, and the ugly of governance in the Golden State.” --Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, professor of the practice of public policy communication, University of Southern California

“Here we get gripping insider portraits of elections that not only served as high political drama, but also changed the historical trajectory of America's most dynamic state.” --Ethan Rarick, author of California Rising: The Life and Times of Pat Brown

a book on the depth and breadth of California politics that was not only a joy to read
By Julie Kanoff
Finally, a book on the depth and breadth of California politics that was not only a joy to read, but made me want to know more and inspired me to become more than ever before an advocate for voter engagement. In story after story taken from historical records, the importance of an informed electorate is laid out. Change took place at the polls. Sometimes very few voters made incredibly consequential changes. Reading "Game Changers: Twelve Elections That Transformed California" along with daily reading of the local newspaper could go a long way toward engaging and mobilizing the vast numbers of California residents who neither vote, nor even register to vote. This book proves, every voter counts, if they vote.

Worthy of required Civics Class read.

The old formula, "can't see the forest for the trees", I plead guilty. 6 of the 12 elections, lived through and sometimes knew something important was happening but never did understand the full dimensions and the intertwined politics before and after. A fascinating and easyl reading description of various elections and how they changed the state.

Terrific look at California's path to the present day
By Valleyblue
If I remember correctly, fourth grade is where I learned California history. Learned may be a bit of an overstatement since I remember few details—not because I’m stupid, at least I hope not—but because the history as it was taught from the history books was about as interesting as a twenty-five pound bag of sand. We studied explorers, settlers, missions, the gold rush, and I’m falling asleep just writing about it. Other than visiting a mission or two over the years and a trip with out-of-town guests to Sutter’s Fort (snore), there’s very little about the heavily sanitized fourth grade history books that seem to relate to life in California today. Those we studied were “great men that did great things.” Yeah, right.

As you can see, I never thought California history was very interesting. Isn’t it amazing how one book can change all that? Game Changers was a game changer for my interest in California history. This book should be the model for how history books are written; it’s part textbook, part tell-all expose, and all fascinating. There’s no sterilization in the stories, you hear what happened, warts and all. We learn how California’s legendary figures manipulated the system for personal gain, how Southern California ended up getting Northern California’s water, how the state’s constitution evolved, and a lot more. And it’s all explained by looking at twelve critical and intriguing elections.

Game Changers is the first book that I know of that provides an explanation of why California is the way it is today and how we got here. If all history books were written like Game Changers, nobody would be able to get enough of California history. If you’re not a Californian, still read this book because it is really interesting—however, be advised and warned that it will make you very curious about the real story of the particular state in which you live.
