A Gentle Introduction

I wouldn't call this a 'gentle' introduction but I guess that would be relative. The material is presented fairly straight forward and cuts out a lot of unnecessary math. Don't misunderstand, you'll have to have some concepts of Linear Algebra to make it through the book. These are graduate level concepts so expect graduate level effort to understand these concepts. I purchased this book without adequate preparation in mathematics but I was able to follow the concepts. I'm now gaining the math knowledge needed and I'll go through the book a 2nd time.

A "gentle" as this subject can be

This is my first introduction to this subject and I cannot compare it to other books on quantum computers. For a subject this complicated and often counter-intuitive, this book is very readable. It contains enough examples to understand each topic before moving on. There are also a lot of useful warnings about incorrect assumptions that the readers might carry over from vector spaces and linear algebra. The authors seem very in-tune to common misconceptions that the reader might have and they take time to correct them. The authors are not stingy about repeating definitions, facts and expanding notations where it is helpful. Still, don't expect to casually browse through this book unless you already know a lot about the subject. It takes work.

A decent introduction

This is a good introduction to quantum computing, modulo a few things. I'm a mathematician, and I often found the calculations and concepts explained in a needlessly complicated way. For example, the definition and derivation of the density operator material was very opaque. A density operator is a positive operator with unit trace, so why not say that before getting into rather complicated calculations to illustrate its connections to the quantum state? The formalism invoked really muddied the waters. The same could be said about the material on measurement, and in a few other places. Otherwise, the book is excellent. The exercises are useful, and explanations are well thought out and written. Recommended.

About the Author
E. R. Torre is a writer/artist whose first major work, the mystery graphic novel The Dark Fringe, was optioned for motion picture production by Platinum Studios (Men In Black, Cowboys vs. Aliens). At DC Comics, his work appeared in role-playing game books and the 9-11 Tribute book. This later piece was eventually displayed, along with others from the 9-11 tribute books, at The Library of Congress. More recently he released Shadows at Dawn (a collection of short stories), Haze (a murder mystery novel with supernatural elements), and Cold Hemispheres (a mystery novel set in the world of The Dark Fringe). He is currently hard at work on his latest science fiction/suspense series, Corrosive Knights, which features the novels Mechanic, The Last Flight of the Argus, Chameleon, and Nox.

I have become a die-hard fan. This is the second of this series I read this week. I will be looking for more. The characters are interesting and the development of the story line is exceptional.

NOX(#4 of Corrosive Knights universe series)

BTW This is a sequel to book #3 The Mechanic It's very useful to have read it,but, can stand alone without it.
If you've read the first one (Chameleon) you'd have a better idea just who the Characters are. So it would certainly help if you've already have read that one.
NOX is an excellent book. And to my pleasant surprise a "Real page turner" The story follows NOX and her few friends your basic smart tough as nails fixer-mechanic. There are enemies on many fronts here but as the story unfolds all the loose ends ,and then some, are all tied up.The plot will have you tantalized,surprised, and plain old just blown away as the story really takes off. Except for a few editing mistakes,and that would be nit-picking this is a damm good SF action adventure. You might catch on to a few things before they're explained but mostly we're all along for a roller-coaster ride of need to know basis. I recommend this book highly!

About the Author
Steve Swatt is a veteran political analyst and public affairs executive. He is a former award-winning political reporter with twenty-five years of journalism experience.

Susie Swatt is a member of the National Advisory Council of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley. She spent nearly forty years as a key staff member in the California Legislature.

Jeff Raimundo recently completed twenty-five years as a political and public relations consultant based in Sacramento. Previously, he enjoyed a twenty-year career as a newspaper reporter and editor.

Rebecca LaVally, Ph.D., teaches rhetorical criticism and persuasion at California State University, Sacramento. She is a former editor of the California Senate's public-policy research office.

Finally, a book on the depth and breadth of California politics that was not only a joy to read, but made me want to know more and inspired me to become more than ever before an advocate for voter engagement. In story after story taken from historical records, the importance of an informed electorate is laid out. Change took place at the polls. Sometimes very few voters made incredibly consequential changes. Reading "Game Changers: Twelve Elections That Transformed California" along with daily reading of the local newspaper could go a long way toward engaging and mobilizing the vast numbers of California residents who neither vote, nor even register to vote. This book proves, every voter counts, if they vote.

Worthy of required Civics Class read.

The old formula, "can't see the forest for the trees", I plead guilty. 6 of the 12 elections, lived through and sometimes knew something important was happening but never did understand the full dimensions and the intertwined politics before and after. A fascinating and easyl reading description of various elections and how they changed the state.

Terrific look at California's path to the present day

If I remember correctly, fourth grade is where I learned California history. Learned may be a bit of an overstatement since I remember few details—not because I’m stupid, at least I hope not—but because the history as it was taught from the history books was about as interesting as a twenty-five pound bag of sand. We studied explorers, settlers, missions, the gold rush, and I’m falling asleep just writing about it. Other than visiting a mission or two over the years and a trip with out-of-town guests to Sutter’s Fort (snore), there’s very little about the heavily sanitized fourth grade history books that seem to relate to life in California today. Those we studied were “great men that did great things.” Yeah, right.

As you can see, I never thought California history was very interesting. Isn’t it amazing how one book can change all that? Game Changers was a game changer for my interest in California history. This book should be the model for how history books are written; it’s part textbook, part tell-all expose, and all fascinating. There’s no sterilization in the stories, you hear what happened, warts and all. We learn how California’s legendary figures manipulated the system for personal gain, how Southern California ended up getting Northern California’s water, how the state’s constitution evolved, and a lot more. And it’s all explained by looking at twelve critical and intriguing elections.

Game Changers is the first book that I know of that provides an explanation of why California is the way it is today and how we got here. If all history books were written like Game Changers, nobody would be able to get enough of California history. If you’re not a Californian, still read this book because it is really interesting—however, be advised and warned that it will make you very curious about the real story of the particular state in which you live.

The movie is so much better.

"London Suite: A Comedy" is one Neil Simon play I had not read. I saw the 1996 TV movie "London Suite," and I thought it was so witty and funny that I set out to read the play. I wish I hadn't, because it was nothing like the movie. First of all, the first act in the play was not in the movie, and was replaced with the story of honeymooners, which was much funnier. The other three acts were in the movie, and while the dialogue was somewhat similar, it lost its charm on the pages. I do not recommend.

A good concept

The teaching methodology is one I want to re-inforce in my room - however, the stories and material are written at a lower age level than I was looking for. I teach readers at the 1st-4th grade ability but are 6th-11th grade and they really struggle with comprehension. I would recommend this book for those teaching 1st-3rd grade.

A must have for Special Ed teachers!!

As a teacher who works exclusively with Autistic children, I know first hand how difficult it is to get your hands on easy, user-friendly, teacher-friendly material for the classroom. This book is like a dream come true. Instead of having to page through reams of material it just gets straight to the lesson, tells me exactly what to do, and supplies me with all the materials. I've already been to school, I've got my credential, and I don't have a lot of extra time to swim through long-winded explanations. Just give me the classroom-tested lesson that works, and I'll try it myself. And guess what? It's awesome. This teacher understands exactly how the Autism classroom works, having served on the "front lines" himself. This is not coming from administrators or researchers in a lab - this is coming from a teacher who is on your side. And on the side of your kids. This is a rare and beautiful thing. I wish there was more material out there just like this for us special ed teachers! Thank you. And I don't know what this other reviewer is talking about with the "mistakes." There's a couple of minor printing errors in the book that are fixed on the CD. You have to print out the worksheets from the CD anyway if you want your students to actually do the work and benefit from the curriculum. Anyway, this is a fantastic book. I hope there's more material like this coming soon. I've been using it since the beginning of the year and I'm already seeing improvements in my students' comprehension and, as a result, in their communication skills. I've even noticed a sharp decrease in echolalia amongst several students. Amazing!

His autobiography, I Am Jackie Chan, answers those questions in an engaging, almost novelistic style. When his father moves to Australia to take up a new job, the young Jackie is placed in Hong Kong's China Drama Academy under the tutelage of Master Yu Jim-yuen. His autobiography, unfortunately, contains few of these elements. In minute detail, he chronicles his punishing childhood in the Chinese Opera Research Institute and his rise to superstardom. From age seven to 17, under the severe discipline?some might even call it child abuse?of his Opera Master, Chan was trained for theater and film work. After the death of Bruce Lee (Chan was a stuntman in Lee's Fists of Fury and Enter the Dragon), his studio, Golden Harvest, attempted to turn him into a Lee clone. Fans of action cinema will be thrilled with this autobiography. The star of films like Drunken Master (1978), Police Story (1985), and Supercop (1992) recounts his life in short, machine-gun-burst chapters. Beginning with his formative days as the acolyte of an opera master at the Chinese Drama Academy, Chan dives into his Hong Kong stuntman apprenticeship and career as a worldwide kung fu, shoot-'em-up idol. The staccato narrative ends with his U.S. breakthrough, Rumble in the Bronx (1994). Chan afterward divulges his "top ten stunts," "top ten fights," and his accrued bodily "aches and pains" in separate appendixes. A section called "Jackie's Films" affords a whirlwind survey of Chan's oeuvre. Written with noted Asian American journalist Yang, this volume makes for thorough, two-fisted coverage and should be read in tandem with Jeff Rovin's The Essential Jackie Chan Sourcebook (Pocket, 1997). I read the disclaimer: Writing, markings, etc... may be found on the book..

I knew I was buying a used book. I took the chance, since "I Am Jackie Chan" has been a hard book to find. Also, I've read the book already, so to me, it was worth the risk.

I received it today, and it has a few bends on the soft cover, but other than that, the book is perfect.
I noticed that the book is actually sold for six US dollars, More than double what I paid for it, but alas, I have my book and I can sleep at night.

I'm one happy customer. Maybe I got lucky, who knows. No book is the same when it's used. So this review may not be the same for other customers.

As for the book itself, it's an awesome book. You might want to rent it out at your public library if it's not available on Amazon.

I can't say much about the book without talking too much. All I can say is that it's an amazing story. Jackie Chan tells how he got his name, Jackie Chan! I always thought it was a super awesome story, and I enjoy telling others about it. When I tell them, they think it's funny and I can't help but smile. I read "I Am Jackie Chan" 14 years ago, for the first time, and I still remember a lot of the book. Why did I buy it, if I still remember the book? I'm starting a library of my own, and this book was a "Must Have" for me. That's how awesome this book is. :D

Review for I Am Jackie Chan

When selecting this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was certainly surprised when I began reading. Based off of his fun-loving charisma today, you would have never expected that he was raised in an extremely strict setting. Of course that never stopped him from acting out and putting people in their place, but punishment was cruel during his time and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and his Chinese Drama Academy family. Reading about his struggle on finding a promising job after his life at the Academy really helped me put into perspective as to how hard he's worked to become what he is today. I was a bit surprised when he shared his struggle with acting, since that's what he's known for, but I suppose with each film, an actor's skills only get better. Overall, this autobiography is very intriguing as it is consumed of many things I've never read of before.

I am Jackie Chan - My life in Actopm

After reading this book on Jackie Chan I am truly amazed that he survived his early childhood, but it has made me appreciate all the efforts he uses to make sure his movies are funny and action packed. I know that I could not have gone thru what he did in the Chinese Opera Schools. This book had a lot of pictures of him as a young boy and of his parents. Well worth reading to know about one of your favorite actors.
