An invaluable guide
By Chris Sterling
Out of print for years, and thus now hard to find and pricy if you locate a copy, this is the first of a set of volumes tracing the engine-powered fighting vessel in all countries. Tightly organized and combining concise text and clear diagrams, it traces the rise of both capital and smaller fighting vessel types, providing key information on ship armament, armor, and layout. The period covered--just 45 years--saw the greatest change in warships ever, from powered ships of the line looking not unlike their wooden forebears, to battleships and other types that provided the basis for the ships of the next half century and more. No other single title offers as much comparable information as this one--highly recommended.

Great book, like the others, but...
By T. Stibal
Well, I have to second what others have written before me. I hold three of the volumes of the series, and find them useful when working through an issue on naval warfare where I need to refresh my memory on a point. While there are better (and more comprehensive) reference sources out there (for example, I am inclined to believe what I see in the comprehensive book on the Imperial Japanese fleet over what I read here), none of them (not even Jane's) gathers it all together in such a wall laid out form.

But, it's not perfect. Last week, during research for an article on the early days of Whitehead torpedo warfare, I had cause to reference this volume's section on the Spanish Navy. That's a topic upon which my source materials are pretty limited. I've got generalist histories of the Spanish American War, a couple of naval histories of that conflict, the internet (of course), and that's about it. So, when looking for details on the seminal "anti-torpedo boat" ship Destructor, I pulled down my copy of Conway's.

And, what I saw kinda made my jaw drop. Under the entry for the Destructor (an ugly little ship if ever there was one) was the curious, categoric statement that the Destructor was one of the first warships provided with turbo-electric propulsion. Say what?

Mind you, some ship somewhere had to be the first. I hadn't paid overmuch attention to the issue of turbo-electric propulsion. I had noted that the collier converted into the USS Langley was so equipped, and that (aside from a couple of American dreadnought, the early carriers Lexington and Saratoga, and the French liner Normandie) turbo electric systems were relatively rare.

But, turbo-electric propulsion on a ship that dated back to the mid-1880s? Yet, there it was, both in narrative form and in the short description of the ship's method of propulsion: "2 shaft TE". Go figure.

So, I made note of the fact and moved on. Later, during a search for decent images in digital form, I did a bit of digging around on the internet, only to find that all of the sources there mentioned the Destructor as being of the much more usual vertical triple expansion layout. (These included Spanish websites.) So, who was right?

On balance, despite the overall authority of Conway's work (much of which was farmed out apparently, although I was not able (from the notes in the foreword) to determine who did the work on the Spanish fleet; one John Campbell's name is prominently mentioned, but with no additional details), I'm inclined to doubt this book on this one point. Naval electrical equipment was barely out of the prototype stage in 1880, and the equipment necessary to provide a turbo electric drive for a warship the size of a small cruiser would seem to have been out of reach at that point in time.

So, that one odd, apparent error aside, this is a great book. But, I will always wonder where the input came from that accounted for the peculiar comment on the obscure little Destructor.

By the way, all of the volumes in this series are wrist-bendingly heavy. They are not something to try to pick up at arm's length.

Incredibly useful
By Paul Lawrence
It is difficult to describe the plethora of technical data compressed into this weighty publication. Taking on a project of this sort must have given the editors heart palpitations but I must admit that all the contributors have done a stellar job here and created what must surely rank as THE reference work to warships of the era. And if you are lucky enough to be able to afford the entire series you will undoubtedly garner a lifetime of pedantic pleasure for your troubles because each one of these nicely presented and laid out books is pretty much the bees knees.

This tome has a stack of selling points. Firstly the very comprehensive nature of the thing is staggering given the many small navies discussed not to mention the age of the primary sources. The number of photographs and line drawings will please readers no end and makes this series pretty much a shoe-in to be the centrepiece of any naval wargamer or modellers collection of reference works.

One of the great things I liked the most about this particular work is the fact that a number of the major countries have an introductory section that brings the reader up to speed as to that nations overall military, economic and especially naval situation at the start of the time period.

Sure this book will bring a tear to the eye of your budget but ... you only have to buy it once. So go on, you're worth it (to quote the advert).
