Another good book

This is a good addition to the scrap metal workshop series. I really like it and recommend it. One caution though, unlike the other books this one does require a bit of welding knowledge and access to welding equipment unlike the other books which required only simple tools found in most garages or were easy and inexpensive to acquire.

Twice a year the four neighborhoods compete in the Joust of the Saracino, complete with full Medieval regalia. Every evening the locals walk up and down Corso Italia in the passeggiata to visit with friends before dinner. Saturday mornings are for the large open air market selling everything from food to shoes to toys to kitchen wares.

I had not noticed the bas-reliefs on the barrel vault of the main door of Pieve Santa Maria or visited the Museo Ivan Bruschi before, let alone the Telecommunications Museum which, like you, we stumbled on unexpectedly.

Inside Tuscany Travel Principles

Principle 1: Go slow and easy. Plan to return.
Slow travel is where it's at. Focus on a few things in depth rather than many things lightly. Rushing from one place to another for 10 to 20 minutes gets in the way of true appreciation of the culture. You have to believe that you will return and that quantity of sites doesn't equal quality of trip.

Principle 2: Adapt and learn new things.
Trying new things leads to adventures and stories that you'll never forget. Remember that it is not our hosts' responsibility to make things "just like home" -- give up the catsup -- it's our responsibility to enjoy the differences and to make their home ours.

Principle 3: Travel cheap.
Expensive chain four-star hotels and tourist-based restaurants shelter you from the local people, culture, and best food. They prey upon your insecurities. (The number of stars in a hotel's name relates to how many services the hotel provides, not cleanliness.) Take a leap: use the one, two, or three star hotels and look for the less expensive restaurants where locals eat. So what if the menu is not in English -- go for it. The fewer euros you spend, the more you need to interact with people, and the more you interact, the more fun you have. It costs nothing to join the evening passeggiata, but it is an unforgettable experience.

Principle 4: Come to "tour" and to "live."
When touring, do everything you can to live there. Put your clothes in the drawers, closets, and wardrobes -- even just for a couple of nights. Walk slowly through the streets, look for restaurants to visit. Shop for meats, cheeses, and wines for a picnic. Look around and tell yourself, "I live here." Use a base to reduce wasted time moving from place-to-place and to get to know a place well.

Principle 5: Put your camera -- and cell phone -- down and look around.
Pictures are nice -- memories are better. It's a richer experience to see through your naked eyes rather than a viewfinder. If you want pictures, look with your eyes first and save it in your memory. Don't wait to see your vacation until you watch the video at home or on YouTube.

Principle 6: Fly under the radar.
We Americans often shock our hosts because we are loud in voice and dress. You'll never hide your tourist status or that you are an American -- nor should you -- but you can fly under the radar. Leave your baseball caps at home. Locals don't wear T-shirts with advertising. Be humble and respectful in actions and dress appropriately to earn our hosts' respect and gratitude. A little enthusiasm for their culture and listening wins people over.

Principle 7: Does €25.00 really matter?
Money flows like water while traveling and it's possible to get too obsessed by it. You may decide to forgo a restaurant meal for a couple of pizzas and drinks for €25.00. A three-course meal for two at an authentic local restaurant might cost you €50.00. One month later, when you are home, will you really worry about that €25.00? Or, will you wish that you'd tried that restaurant?

Principle 8: Pack light, walk easy.
No one ever returns home from a trip and says, "I wish I'd packed more." I live out of a carry-on for three months. You want to be flexible and able to travel quickly without dragging 100 pounds of large suitcases to the hotel. Lay everything out on the bed before you leave and put half of it away -- then do it again. Remember, you'll probably never see those people again and they don't care whether you've worn the same shirt and pants five days in a row. Take light clothes that you can wash easily in the sink and that will dry fast -- I've learned to leave my cotton knit shirts and jeans home.

Excellent travel guide

My wife and I used this unique very personal guide on our stay in the Arezzo area last month. Arezzo is an enchanting small city in southeast Tuscany with medieval roots as attested to by the stone wall that surrounds it. Scott Tiezzi Grabinger's book is well organized, easy to follow and full of both practical information and insights about the town, the area and Italian culture in general. It includes tips about places to stay and to eat with some excellent restaurant recommendations that we can vouch for having followed them. An entire section is devoted to detailed descriptions of the several medieval and Renaissance era churches worthwhile visiting in Arezzo and another to the several interesting museums. Both chapters contain valuable historical tidbits and detailed descriptions of the art work. The recipes for popular Tuscan dishes are a bonus.

The author is not only knowledgeable but also clearly enamored with his subject. His infectious enthusiasm helped us enjoy and appreciate this wonderful part of Tuscany.

Scott Tiezzi Grabinger is an American who lives in Arezzo and has written a series of guides to its province and the southern part of Siena Province, fascinating and beautiful parts if Tuscany that few tourists see on their first visit to the region. He takes you through lesser-known villages and churches in the same detail that the big commercial guides provide for the usual must-sees, so that you come to understand what a cultural wealth is to be found in even the most out-of-the-way places. Multiple instances of same module containing a PLI call

Swapnajit, First congratulations on your book. This is a major progress in documenting and demistifying the PLI mechanism. The examples of your book are excelent starting points. I grade myself as a medium expert in PLI. So I am still waiting for a second, higher-class book to cover more advanced topics. One of them is multiple instances of a module containing a PLI call and hence multiple instances of the same C code. My problems started when data belonging to one instance interfered with data belonging to other instance. Actually I would like to see in your next book or revision some tips about this issue. In general some good PLI coding practices would be wellcomed. I also encountered race conditions in which the order of the PLI C routines calling influenced the behaviour, and hence not reliable. The second subject I liked very much in your book is the communication between verilog processes. The actual application I hoped to be able to put to work is a kind of "software -hardware coverification" (for poors). Actually I have a PLI that mimics the bus activity of a CPU and now I want it to run real C program. I would like that C program to run in a different environment from the simulator, and only on CPU-read and CPU-write to enable a handshake mechanism. Since I am not a TCP IP socket expert I dropped the effort after a couple of days, when I reached the notorious deadlock of both processes waiting for one another... I would also like to see in the next revision tips about debugging, and some NOT-TO-DOs. I encountered some problems when using parameters in verilog that are passed also to PLI's. I think you may add some words about this as well. All in all I enjoyed the book. Keep up ! Last but not least thank you for your answers to my e-mails regarding the PLI stuff. Save your money and buy the Stuart Sutherland book "The Verilog PLI Handbook" ISBN 0-7923-8489-X it's much better. I have both.

A very useful book

This is a very useful book for those who want to learn intricacies of Verilog PLI without spending hours on reading manuals. The best part of this book that I liked is its set of examples - almost all functions and their uses have been explained with an easy-to-understand example. Most of these examples are presented in their bare-bone structure so that users can customize them according to their needs. A more careful look at the examples would reveal that the author has subtly divided them into two categories - one for the beginners and the other for the more advanced users.
Overall, I will recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn Verilog PLI.

This book was perfect for me!

As a beginner to the world of both bonsai and ficus I found this book extremely helpful and easy to read and follow. Lots of useful information which I could not wait to put into practice.

Great Resource for Beginners

I wanted an easy, quick read that told me exactly what I needed to know. I didn't want something VERY in depth, just a starter, which is what this is billed as. I got this and more as I found the chapter on the history of the tree very enlightening. Full colour illustrations too. I now wish I had bought the paper version instead of the Kindle one. I particularly enjoyed the instructions on braiding, which I intend to try, as well as the section on pests and how to get rid with everyday solutions instead of pesticides. I lost my previous bonsai to pests, which is heartbreaking after spending years on it! The comprehensive index in the rear of the book is great to have and will save me lots of time as I refer back in the future. A recommended read, shame that some of the number formatting is a little off, but it doesn't detract from the info.

About the Author
DONALD HEDEKER, PHD, is Professor of Biostatistics in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the author of numerous peer-reviewed papers.

ROBERT D. GIBBONS, PHD, is Director of the Center for Health Statistics; Professor of Biostatistics in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health; and Professor of Psychiatry in the College of Medicine, all at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the author of numerous peer-reviewed papers.

good book with good coverage

This is a good book on this topic. It is not the best of a long list of excellent and highly competitive texts published by Wiley and Springer-Verlag but there cannot be too many books available on this important problem. This text may be better suited for some applied researchers who do not need the theoretical treatment that is given in the Rubin-Little, Verbeke-Molenberghs or the Fitzmaurice texts. The text by Rubin and Little deals with missing data problems in general and not just in the context of longitudinal data. But the Pattern Mixture models developed by Little are commonly used in longitudinal analysis.

An excellent study

This is an excellent account of the surprisingly little known, and often misrepresented, love story between Queen Marie Antoinette and the Swedish Count Axel von Fersen. Ms Farr has gone to the primary documents instead of relying on secondary sources, and discovered the astonishing truth behind this controversial affair. I find her interpretations highly convincing and backed up by available data. This book is recommended reading for anyone interested in Marie Antoinette and the French revolution.

I enjoyed reading this book!

This book makes Marie-Antoinette very much look like a real person (which she was off course) and I like to believe that the story Evelyn Farr tells us is true because it would mean that MA did enjoy real love with a capital L in her short life.

Print to small to see.

I tried to read this on my Kindle but, they loaded it showing two pages at a time so, the print was to small to see on Kindle. I will try Kindle for PC later and provide and update.
