About the Author

Suzanne Marshall is the author of bedtime stories and stories for kids that are positive and uplifting. Suzanne is passionate about promoting self-esteem and self-soothing techniques in kids. She uses positive affirmations to help kids cope with problems and stressful situations.

An honors graduate of Smith College, Suzanne has been a produced playwright, prize-winning videographer, and teacher. She loves to read, especially before bedtime!

This is an inspiring book of bedtime affirmations -- personalized for girls named Olivia. High quality writing with great photographs of sleeping animals. NOTE: this is a soft cover book, not a hardcover. Personalized hardcover books usually cost above $30. Highly recommend if you're looking for very positive, healthy, and good books for kids.

Excellent bedtime story! As every parent knows, bedtime can be a challenge, and it hasn't been easy finding soothing bedtime stories for my daughter. This book is perfect. My daughter loves the repetition of her name and the positive affirmations. It's been a great way for her to end her day.

Violence in War and Peace: An Anthology is the only book of its kind available: a single volume exploration of social, literary, and philosophical theories of violence.

Edited by two of anthropology’s most passionate voices on this subject, Violence in War and Peace is a sweeping collection that looks at various concepts and modes of violence. Drawing from a remarkable range of sources, the editors juxtapose the routine violence of everyday life---what scholars Taussig and Benjamin have termed “terror as usual”---against the sudden outcropping of unexpected, extraordinary violence such as the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, the state violence of Argentina’s "Dirty War", revolution, vigilante “justice,” and organized criminal violence. Despite the impulse to distance ourselves from such acts, Scheper-Hughes and Bourgois take care to remind us that concepts of violence and aggression have often failed to acknowledge symbolic and structural forms. About the Author
Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley where she also directs doctoral studies in "Medicine, Science and the Body". As a critical anthropologist and outspoken public intellectual, Scheper-Hughes's lifework concerns the violence of everyday life from analyses of madness among "leftover" bachelors farmers in rural Ireland; the madness of hunger and the experience of mothering in Northeast Brazil; AIDS and sexual citizenship in Cuba, Brazil and the United States; violence, 'truth' and justice in the New South Africa; death squads, democracy, and the execution of Brazilian street children, to the global traffic in human organs. She is best known for her ethnographies, Death Without Weeping (l992) and Saints, Scholars and Schizophrenics (l979, new, updated edition 2000). She has been the recipient of many awards and prizes including a Guggenheim, the Staley Prize, the Margaret Mead Award, the Wellcome Medal, the Bryce Wood Book Award, the Harry Chapin Media Award, and the Pietre Prize.Philippe Bourgois is Professor and Chair of the Medical Anthropology Program at the University of California, San Francisco. His most recent book, In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio (1995) was awarded the C. Wright Mills Prize and the Margaret Mead Prize. He has conducted fieldwork in Central America on political violence, ethnic conflict, immigration and labor relations, and street children and has published several dozen academic and popular media articles on political and intimate violence as well as on substance abuse, inner-city poverty and ethnic conflict.

Heart of Darkness

I scare easily so I didn't really want to get into this book, but for professional reasons I wanted quickly to access and understand a diverse lot of anthropological theory about violence as a phenomenon, and wound up with this book on my shelf and then, I took it everywhere I went for about a month. A heavy book physically, VIOLENCE IN WAR AND PEACE benefits from Blackwell Publishing's wide page strategy and the extreme thinness of each page allows the two co-editors to pack an unbelievable number of beautifully chosen articles into one volume.

We learn about violence in war, and just about every war-front over the last 100 years. Scheper-Hughes and Bourgois concentrate not only on individual suffering but they are absolutely fixated on the disappearance (or "die off") or whole peoples and tribes, and this material is especially searing. We see violence working in the service of colonialism, and also as a tool of resistance movements here and around the world. I like the excerpting from the classic ISHI IN TWO WORLDS, together with Scheper-Hughes' own more dispassionate account of what the devil old Kroeber was doing with Ishi's body both before and after his death. Everywhere there is a welcome contextualization. Do not read if easily triggered

This is a very interesting book. It is a very sad and depressing book because of the subject matter. It is well organized and thought provoking. I often had to step back and evaluate what I read because it is so disturbing and depressing at points. I cried several times during my readings. ***Trigger*** This book is full of violence, sometimes graphically described, and there a lot of instances of rape. A lot of bad things happen to good/innocent people/children.

Relevant to Life

Even though we often overlook the fact, Augustine is full of common-sense, every day spiritual instruction. That's what makes this book so valuable in the end. Every daily meditation contains a selection from Augustine, followed by a prayer.
This compact book is bound in brown faux leather, containing one purple ribbon for keeping place. The printing is attractive, with standard Catholic Book Publishing fonts. The cover is relatively plain save the title and a decorative cross. It's a rather attractive book, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a minute or two daily with St. Augustine.

Timeless spiritual wisdom from one of history's great thinkers, succinctly organized by the editor. Each daily reading is a couple of sentences long, followed by a sentence-long prayer. A great way to begin the day or to use for meditation.

Little book, good food.

Though both have value, which is the greater part in the eyes of God? The body or the soul? We feed our bodies at least an hour or more every day, but what do we do to feed our souls? I read at least an hour or more every day from the Bible and a half dozen other spiritual writings. While this book pales in comparison to other books I'm reading, for its genre--meditative quotes for each day of the year--it's the best in my opinion. The insightful quotes are concise and deep, and makes you think. It's perfect for people who make little time during the day to feed their souls--and in a case like that, any food to a starving soul is good food. And in my opinion this is the best "fast food for the soul" I've personally come across. And as St. Augustine is one of the saints whom most Christian denominations respect, I've given this as a gift to many of my Protestant friends. Everyone I've given this too has enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book. In my opinion it's good food even for those who read a lot and even to those who read little, and is a good tool for evangelization.
