This book is very handy and list a large selection of fruit jars. If your a fruit jar collector this is a must have book. This book is in excellant condition, which they listed as being in very good. I don't believe it was even used, so I have a new book in my reference library. I woul buy from this seller and highly recommend this seller to all buyers.

absolutely fantastic

I picked up this book expecting a run of the mill self help book for men, and got instead the wizdom of the inner journey of masculinity gathered from the germanic world over the course of hundreds of years. Recommended for all men. My suggestion for follow up read would be joseph campbell - the power of myth.

Strange mix of great and absurd (heavy on the latter)

Reading through this book, I was struck by the polar shifts back and forth between strong and agreeable material, and very odd and outlandish material. It makes for difficult rating; oscillating between 4-5 star content, and 1-2 star.

The book has three focuses. The best part concerns male studies and inner masculine qualities that we've mostly lost and forgotten. The second focus is on mythology and psychology (both of which are used much more than necessary). The third area is poetry. Although he uses "outside" poetry that is fitting, such as from Blake, Bly often uses his own poetry. It seems like he is largely promoting his own poetry. And whereas poetry from others can be seen as supporting material, molding his own poetry to fit what he was arguing for seems like cheating.

Throughout the book, he constantly talks about dysfunctional (or "messed-up") families, and they almost always sound the same, with the father being abusive and destructive. I keep getting the impression that he is talking about his own youth and personal experience. Although this might be fitting of some families, I could never relate to or identify with the typical family he describes, and yet he uses "always" and "all" a lot as though universal. Here is a typical comment of everyone's father: "...we see the father's devouring hunger, his fear of death, his insistence that everyone live in disorder". Hmmm, that doesn't sound like any fathers I know.

There are places where Bly descends into very strange writing. How about this: "Eagles sit on the top branches of the sacred tree, with dead animals underneath the claws. Rotting bits of flesh fall down... where the swine eat them. We are the swine. When all the meat that comes down from above is rotten, then neither the sons nor daughters receive the true meat". LOL Well, thanks for that lovely picture! On pp. 170-171, he goes on and on about people being "copper". I still don't understand what he was trying to say. He also talks a lot about The Great Mother, whoever she is. The weird shifts between modern living and reality, and the far-fetched fantasy stuff from millennia ago, are hard to reckon and tie together, even though they apparently make sense to him (and maybe only him).

Bly seems to be against universities, science, and the church. Mythology, astrology, and even alchemy are apparently more realistic and viable to him. It's ironic and very telling that he even admits (on p. 120 of my copy) that "Mythology is full of stories of the bad father.... There are no good fathers in the major stories of Greek mythology". Now we can see why Bly likes the old mythologies so much. Really, when you put everything together, Bly only puts stock and value in cultures in eras BC. It's as though only them - with their numerous gods and goddesses - mean anything, and everything since then can't be trusted. I'm surprised that other readers are glossing over this important point. It's good to be open-minded, but not so completely that we believe anything that comes along. That's the danger I see in some reviewers.

The book early on pointed to the importance of mentoring, and I started to get an appreciation for that. [As I get older, I can see myself "giving back" and mentoring younger persons]. I thought the book would offer some great tips and suggestions, but sadly, it did not. It only mentioned some vague mentoring in a fantasy setting, and nothing useful or practical. Another missed opportunity for substance and value.

I first thought that this would be a good companion to John Eldredge's wonderful "Wild at Heart", but whereas that is based on real-world living and some Christianity thrown in, this is too heavily-based in fantasy land. The great parts - though few - still warrant at least one read through. Too bad it isn't edited of all the fluff. It'd make a great book in sharply edited form. It can be a hard read getting through the material that Bly values so much and wants to promote just to get to the good tidbits. After reaching about 2/3's of the way through the book, I started finding it difficult to to take much of the material seriously. It was like "Hush Rob with the fantasy stuff; just talk straight to us and say what you want to say".

I agree with another reviewer that the book is way longer than necessary. Ideally, he should have put the down-to-earth discussions and more relevant and sensible mythology into say Volume 1, and left all the extraneous material and far-fetched fantasy as a Volume 2 for readers who want to go to that level.

It's about the transition from childhood to teenhood to adulthood. It explains the rituals of the past, and relates them to the present. Many things are missing in todays youth ... but with the help of reading this book and passing it forward, perhaps that will change the future of our society.

About the Author
Steven J Zaloga was born in 1952, received his BA in history from Union College, and his MA from Columbia University. He has published numerous books and articles dealing with modern military technology, especially armoured vehicle development. His main area of interest is military affairs in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the Second World War, and he has also written extensively on American armoured forces.

A good addition to your M1 library

Overall a good book but could have used tighter editing. I would give it a 4.5 if I could.

It was published in January of 1993 so he was busy researching and writing in the years that followed the First Gulf War. The backdrop was a victorious US Army and the M1 played a vital role in that victory. It was a tank that everyone wanted to know more about.

He covers most major topics about the tank but none in much detail which is understandable given the limited page count of the Osprey books. He discusses the story of the development of the M1 but for a more detailed treatment I would recommend you read Orr Kelly's book, "King of the Killing Zone". I have not yet read Hunnicutt's book about the M1 so I cannot say how Kelly and Hunnicutt compare.

There are, however, some minor problems with this book.

Pictures are flipped reversing right and left. The dog house, another name for the structure housing the gunner's primary sight, is always on the right side of the tank in front of the tank commander's 50 cal MG. The external APU was mounted on the right rear. Pictures appear to be flipped on pages - 1, 17, 19, 20, 38 top left.

On page 8 Dr. Philip Lett Jun is metioned. With a last name of Jun is he Korean? Nope, apparently Osprey always translates US English into the Queen's English where Jun. is an abbreviation for Junior which would be more recognizable if they had left it as the American English abbreviation Jr. Armour and Programme are spellings that I am familiar with but why do this in the first place? Zaloga was born in the USA and went to school and received his degrees in the USA. The Queen's English does not come naturally to him. Why translate his manuscript into the Queen's English?

On page 18 the number of Abrams tanks in a battalion and in an ACR are wrong. Someone has trouble with math. Yes, an armor battalion has a 2-tank section in the BN HHC and yes, each of the four platoons has 14 tanks but 14 x 4 = 56 and 56 + 2 = 58, not 55. The same problem is found in description of the ACR where an armored cavalry regiment is described as having three squadrons each with three troops containing 9 tanks and a 14 tank company. 9 x 3 = 27 + 14 = 41 tanks in a squadron and this agrees with the text. But 41 x 3 squadrons does not equal 116 but 123 so there are 123 Abrams in an armored cavalry regiment. Were there any Abrams tanks in the ACR HHT?

On page 19 the list of M1A1 Abrams tank battalions that participated in the Desert Storm mention one battalion twice, 4-66 Armor: the first time is 4-66 Armor in 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Div and the second time as 4-66 Armor in 3rd Phantom Brigade, 3rd Inf serving as 3rd Brigade in 1st Armored Div. There are two mistakes here the first being two 4-66 Arm and the second having to to with 1st and 3rd Brigade 1st Arm Div. Other sources identify the 4-66 Arm, 3rd Brigade 3rd Inf Div serving as 1st Brigade in 1st Armored while the unit composed of 3-35 Arm, not 4-66 Arm, and 1-37 Arm is identified as 3rd Brigade 1st Armored Div instead of 1st Brigade as given in Zaloga (see Wikipedia, Order of Battle of the Gulf War Ground Campaign and the references at the bottom). I know, it confuses me too. It is easier to understand if written out like this.

On page 42 in the NATO tri-color camo description the FedStd numbers for brown and green are switched. FS 34074 is green while FS 30051 is brown.

I enjoyed the brief section on the Spinning "Vee" vehicle tactical markings and wish that it could have been longer. I also do not think that the Marines were inspired by the German WW2 Afrika Korps to create their palm tree design since the Marine tankers received their M1A1 training at Twentynine Palms, CA (plate descriptions on p. 47). I have not found anything that explains the choice one way or the other.

Despite the errors and given the small number of books about the M1, this is one that is definitely worth getting.

One of Zaloga's Finest Works

This book, having been written in the early 1990s, concentrates on the M1A1 Abrams tank that was used in the Gulf War of 1991. However, Zaloga does not skimp on the Abrams' developmental history, starting off with the M26 Pershing-derived Patton and M60 series and the failed MBT-70 and XM803 tanks of the late Vietnam era. He also describes the competition between the Chrysler and General Motors prototypes and the German Leopard II entry, and how a modified Chrysler model with the novel turbine engine won out. Also described in some detail is the composition of the Burlington/Chobham armor, including millimeter-equivalent of protection on the front of both the original M1 and the later M1A1 tanks. The main guns and their ammunition are covered in detail, including muzzle velocity and penetration figures for various rounds. Rounding out the development with a discussion of fire control system and staged upgrades, Zaloga moves on to the operational history during the Gulf War.
Considering the age of the original text, it is impressive that Zaloga covers upgrades that have only recently been implemented such as the M1A1-D and M1A2 digitized tanks. Naturally, more recent developments such as AIM and M1A2SEP are missing, as these are just now entering service. In the last pages, he includes several line drawings showing profiles of the four major variants of the Abrams tank, facilitating easy comparison. He also mentions the armored recovery vehicle which was not procured, and the bridgelayer which is just now entering service as the M104 Wolverine after nearly being cancelled outright.
The Operational History includes a list of all tank battalions using Abrams tanks in the Gulf War, and a multi-page summary of the war including an enlightening quote from a company commander describing their routines while travelling in the desert.
While the color plates by Peter Sarson, including the requisite cutaway view "centerfold", are well detailed renditions of both Army and Marine M1A1 tanks used in the Gulf War, earlier models and the Forest Green and NATO tri-color schemes are lacking as these have been included in an earlier book. More importantly, Zaloga includes the FS numbers for the color schemes and even describes the chemical-resistant composition of the paint used.
This little book is packed with a considerable amount of information on the M1 Abrams tank series. Nearly every model and modification to date is covered, which is amazing considering that the original text was published in 1993. Again, while the focus was on the operational use of the M1A1 in the Gulf War, nothing was missed on the development and initial fielding of the original M1. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is a list of units that upgraded to the various models of the Abrams, and when they got them, but that's my personal wish list. Hobbyists, historians, and fans of the Abrams tank alike will find a plethora of facts and photos to delight them.

Love This Book

I can't believe how much I use this book. Don't know how I got along without it. At 57 I still take piano lessons, just to keep me going back to the piano with something new. I love looking up all the new music in this book and seeing the difficulty level and recommendations for other similar works. Every composer is included and I am very impressed with the detail about all of their compositions.

About the Author
Jerry L. Sittser is a professor of religion at Whitworth College. He holds a master of divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and a doctorate in history from the University of Chicago. He is the author of several books, including the best-selling A Grace Disguised.

The Author's Honesty Captivating

As someone who has wrestled with the idea of "the will of God," not only for my life, but for others, Gerald Sittser's book caught my attention. The outstanding feature of this book is the author's honesty about exploring and doing the will of God; an exploration marked by intense pain and heart-searching questions. Sittser keeps the discussion concrete, operating in the day to day world of going to work, raising the kids, grappling with pain, celebrating good times with friends. The chapter on "living in the wonder of the present moment" is some of the best writing out there to bring needed sanity and thoughtful priority to our sometimes hectic lives. Anchoring the will of God to a daily way of life rescues "God's will" from the view that God is playing heavenly hide-and-seek with us. Sittser courageously faces the "why do bad things happen" question and let's the reader ponder it deeply; yet he leads the reader from beyond the "why?" to the "how is God present" question. This is a powerfully thought-provoking book.

You just have to read it, plain and simple!

As an advisee and student of Dr. Sittser's I was naturally drawn to reading this particular book and I am so grateful I did! This particular book should be required reading for everyone! Christians are under emense pressure to discern God's calling and purpose for their lives, but Dr. Sittser has opened the door to following God's will in an exciting and freeing way. God has used this book in my life as I work through what it means to follow God's will. As a college student I have been paralized by the ominous future, but Dr. Sittser has a unique way of pulling everything into perspective and I can feel my fear melting away to a hope for everything wonderful that can be accomplished in the present moment of living in God's will. Please, read this book. Dr. Sittser is an incredibly wise and faithful man of God, he truly lives what he writes. This is one book you should not miss.

We are a group of 12 Christian women reading books to increase our understanding of God and His workings in our lives. This book was a wonderful addition to our knowledge and our libraries. We found the book to be extremely helpful in guiding our understanding of God working in our daily lives and encouraging us to continue living for God daily. We learned that God's plan is not some mystery to be solved or some treasure to be found but living daily, seeking God first and following His revealed will in our daily routines. This daily life will prepare us for the future that God has planned for our life. Mr. Sittser truly captured the reality of how to live the will of God by revealing his unique view from the combined perspective of Bible theologian, college professor, father of three and a man living in today's world. We encourage anyone trying to understand the will of God for their life to read this book and seek God's will.

A Stunning Survey of Early 20th Century SF

Simply put: an essential survey/guide to the 1926-1936 era of (mainly) American sf. Bleiler has read _everything_ published in the magazines during this time period, gives a synopsis of the story, offers historical notes, and quite often comments on the importance (or lack thereof) of the story. David H. Keller comes in for some deadly bone-crushing comments. Bleiler has also tracked down biographical information, going so far as to search Social Security death records. And there's much more, far too much to list here.
Having read a fair number of these stories, his comments are quite accurate (most of what was published by Gernsback is awful dreck, but there were a few important stories published too).
If you have any interest in the this early era of SF this is an essential book for the shelf. And it's fun to read the plot summaries of some absolutely dreadful stories!

Real research & great detail on a real problem. The problem is that we don't provide any usable help for women struggling with addiction. Very short sighted set of anti-child & anti family policies we have. Results in disoriented, discouraged mothers & disabled children.

In War in the Gulf, 1990 91, eminent scholars Majid Khadduri and Edmund Ghareeb paint a very different picture, one that brings historical depth to the portrait, and displays the actions of many of the participants in a new and revealing light.
Khadduri and Ghareeb offer a far more accurate and complex portrait of the Iraq-Kuwait conflict, providing a wealth of background information not readily available before. They made a distinction between the differences between Iraq and Kuwait over frontiers, territory, and sovereignty and the method pursued by Iraqi leaders to resolve those differences. They explore, for instance, the history of relations between Iraq and Kuwait, revealing that Kuwait had once been a part of Basra (in southern Iraq) during the Ottoman rule, and only became a separate country while under British control (it was the British in fact who drew the much-disputed boundary line between Iraq and Kuwait). Khadduri and Ghareeb describe the many decades of struggle to resolve the boundary issue, examining the repeated attempts by other Arab states to mediate according to Islamic traditions of consultation and peaceful resolution within the faith. The authors also show how Saddam Husayn's war with Iran exacerbated the boundary tensions. Because of the decade-long war, Iraq badly needed oil revenue to repay wartime loans and to rebuild, but Kuwait persisted in pumping far beyond its OPEC quota, driving down prices, and costing Iraq billions of dollars of revenue. The book reveals how Kuwait spurned Arab attempts to mediate this clash over oil prices as well as the longstanding boundary dispute, frustrating efforts to resolve this crisis by peaceful means. In one particularly interesting section, the book examines the diplomatic talks during the early summer of 1990, both among various Arab nations (most notably, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Kuwait), and with Saddam Husayn and the United States (they show how messages from Washington and a visit by a congressional delegation lead by Senator Dole convinced the Iraqi leaders that they would be allowed to settle their problems with Kuwait without outside interference). Khadduri and Ghareeb carry us through to the present, exploring the war and its aftermath, from the uprisings against Baghdad, to the continuing U.N. sanctions, to the recent defections from Saddam's inner circle.
War in the Gulf is a balanced, eye-opening account of one of the central events of recent years. It corrects the Western views of most reporting, explaining the frame of mind of the participants as no one has done before and causing us to examine anew such questions as who was responsible for the conflict, and what might have happened if the United States had not intervened so rapidly.

The swift onset of the Persian Gulf War took many observers (and many television viewers) by surprise. It had, historians Khadduri and Ghareeb note, been a long time coming, however. Kuwait had been artificially severed from Iraq at the end of British colonial rule in 1921, and Iraq had long been seeking access to Kuwaiti ports on the Gulf that, had it been granted, might have forestalled war. Carefully tracing the history of the 1990-91 conflict, the authors suggest that Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait followed a certain logic, but not an inevitable one, and that the Allied powers perhaps should have waited for a peaceful Iraqi withdrawal. Theirs is a controversial reading of history, but one that merits an audience.

For anyone studying the Mid East, this is a must read.

The book paints a full picture of the historical dispute between Iraq and Kuwait, which basically started in 1899 when the Kuwaiti royal family made secret deals with the British. It carefully goes over the personalities involved and how they tried to shape the situation. The reading can get slow at times if the reader is unaccustomed to the various spellings of Arabic names and locations, i.e. Husayn = Hussein, Makkah = Mecca. However, the information provided gives a clear insight to the logic of the Iraqi invasion of 1990 and subsequent Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Whether or not one agrees with the conclusions of the authors, it definitely is a wealth of information on the subject. This is a must read for all interested in Mid East politics.
