It’s Christmastime, and once again, Tim and Nick are flat broke. Luckily for them, a famous Greek pop singer and movie star, Minerva, has been getting death threats—and they’re the detectives hired to solve the mystery. From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–Tim Diamond, a clueless London private detective, and his intelligent 14-year-old brother, Nick, are down on their luck again. Surprisingly, they receive a job just before Christmas to protect a gorgeous Greek celebrity singer named Minerva from recent death threats. Turns out, she is a coldhearted beauty who only cares about two things–money and Minerva. When shots are fired and a body is found strangled, all kinds of trouble ensues between Minerva, her aging husband, her manager, the Diamond Brothers, and the police. There are a few suggestive references to Minerva's appearance and her silver-plated breasts but nothing more racy or graphic. The witty banter between the characters keeps this short novel moving at breakneck speed. Tim's literal misinterpretations of everything are absurdly funny, and Nick's skill at solving the crime before anyone else, including the police, is entertaining. Horowitz is a master of tongue-in-cheek wit and groan-worthy puns that both sophisticated young mystery readers and older fans will enjoy.–Madeline J. Bryant, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist
Canny young private detective Nick Diamond and his hilariously clueless older brother, Tim, stumble their way through another slapstick caper—this time protecting a gorgeous but self-absorbed international pop star from an anonymous killer. In London to make appearances at various Christmastime events and to promote her new single, the dazzling Minerva (blond hair, green eyes, “lips that looked like they could suck in a horse”) has received a pair of cryptic death threats. The Diamond brothers spring into action, which generally means winding up flat on their faces or in the clutches of brutish police officers Snape and Boyle. There is a murder, but it’s offstage, and ultimately, they pull off a climactic rescue amid the holiday chaos at Harrods and nab a bad Santa. The riffs on renowned crime novels and films lie thinner on the ground here than in previous episodes, but this, too, will be perfect for Chet Gecko graduates. Grades 4-7. --John Peters

A wonderful Christmas present for the Diamond Brothers
By Lorraine GG
I agree with the other readers who say that this is not the best of the Diamond Brothers stories. There isn't much of a plot in this one, nor is there very much action; the jokes and witty remarks are not quite as funny as they are in some of the other stories.

As the story starts, the brothers are broke and Christmas is not far away. Their affairs improve when Tim is retained to protect a glamorous international celebrity called Minerva, a pop princess and film star of Greek origin, who is receiving death threats on the occasion of her visit to London to switch on the Christmas lights and open the Santa Claus grotto in Harrods. Her husband insists on hiring a private detective, both for extra security and to find the originator of the threats, and her manager is ordered to find one and bring him in for approval. We need to wait until the end of the story to learn why the obviously idiotic and incompetent Tim was selected for the job. I hadn't realised that Tim was 28 years old by the way. After making a fool of himself yet again, he actually makes some sensible remarks about his unsuitability for the private detection business. As usual, it is Nick who notices anomalies, solves all of the mysteries and identifies the would-be killer and the reasons for the threats. The story that began on such a low note ends on a much higher one when the manager gives the brothers a £10,000 cheque in gratitude for all they have done to further the career of Minerva, his most famous and lucrative client.

Minerva does seem an unlikely name for someone of Greek origin: I realise that it is supposed to make us think of Madonna, but Minerva was the Roman name for the Greek goddess Athena. This is just a minor objection, and although it is not the best Diamond Brothers adventure the story does have some good features. The scene where the brothers rush to tidy up their messy office when there is an unexpected knock on their door is very amusing. I also particularly liked the references to Regent Street: it is so true that it is full of shops selling clothes that we couldn't possibly afford and wouldn't want to buy even if we could, and that the Christmas lights are no longer worth travelling to see. Obvious, but spot on. Anthony Horowitz often comes up with observations like this, which is why I continue to read these stories.

The most humorous of all the books, but regrettably the shortest. Finished it in a couple of hours, but laughed out loud throughout, right from the first sentence!!!

Not Bad
By Chris Hunter
I think it was great. Time was funny and humorous without being a caricature. His brother gave the book its anchor but would have love to see the plot extended with more characters.

The Rise of the Right to Know: Politics and the Culture of Transparency, 1945-1975, by Michael Schudson

The American founders did not endorse a citizen’s right to know. More openness in government, more frankness in a doctor’s communication with patients, more disclosure in a food manufacturer’s package labeling, and more public notice of actions that might damage the environment emerged in our own time.

As Michael Schudson shows in The Rise of the Right to Know, modern transparency dates to the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s―well before the Internet―as reform-oriented politicians, journalists, watchdog groups, and social movements won new leverage. At the same time, the rapid growth of higher education after 1945, together with its expansive ethos of inquiry and criticism, fostered both insight and oversight as public values.

Schudson provides case studies of precedent-setting disclosure practices: the Freedom of Information Act (1966), reforms of supermarket labeling (1970s), sunshine legislation in the Congress (1970), the complicated conceptual and legislative origin of the “environmental impact statement,” and newsroom changes that increased the independence and analytical sophistication of news coverage after 1968. These changes brought a “right to know” into political life and helped define a new era for representative democracy―less focus on parties and elections, more pluralism and more players, year-round monitoring of government, and a blurring line between politics and society, public and private. The rise of openness marks a new stage in self-government.

Review
By piecing together the story of new laws on freedom of information, consumer labeling and environmental impact reports, [Schudson] shows that these laws were part of a longer, slower change, which began well before the Summer of Love. Law entrenched new information rights but nothing would have reached the statute book without a relaxation of the political and cultural climate… One of the many strengths of The Rise of the Right To Know is its insistent emphasis on culture and its interaction with law… What Schudson shows is that enforceable access to official information creates a momentum towards a better use of what is disclosed and a refinement of how disclosure is best done. (George Brock Times Literary Supplement 2015-12-09)

Michael Schudson makes a convincing argument that during [the Cold War era] an unprecedented culture of government openness emerged primarily in domestic institutions. Schudson recounts in detail how the public gained the right of access to government documents; to agencies’ predictions of the environmental consequences of their actions; to basic information about processed foods; and to the deliberations and individual votes of Congress. Thanks to Schudson’s own research and reporting, each of these accounts features an unexpected cast of characters, and each shows how big changes can begin with the actions of a few impassioned individuals. (Mary Graham American Prospect 2015-10-01)

This book is a reminder that the right to know is not an automatic right. It was hard-won, and fought for by many unknown political soldiers. Even democratic governments do not necessarily consider that openness is a virtue and will resist attempts to prise the lid off their secrets as a matter of course. (Monica Horten LSE Review of Books 2016-03-15)

[A] learned history. (Jack Shafer Bookforum 2015-12-01)

It’s hard to say anything new about the 1960s, but Michael Schudson has done it―in a big way. An originally conceptualized and eye-opening history, The Rise of the Right to Know identifies the emergence of transparency or openness in the 1960s and ’70s as a leading principle in American political culture. Across a wide range of political and social spheres, he traces the historic shift in our culture from the hidden to the open, the elite to the populist, the expert to the personal, and the rarefied to the accessible―rooted in the liberal, democratic demand that citizens have a right to know about the decisions that shape their lives. This book made me rethink the postwar era and its importance as very few works of scholarship have. (David Greenberg, Rutgers University)

Beautifully readable and wonderfully illuminating
By Judy Polumbaum
In this lucidly written study of the rise of transparency as an American value and, more importantly, practice during the 1960s-70s, sociologist Michael Schudson punctures conventional wisdom with his typical understated brilliance and brings us to a new understanding of U.S. society and politics. Unearthing hitherto neglected evidence through a series of case studies in informational openness, Schudson shows how important values that were never a part of the Founding Fathers' original conceptions emerged in the last century as part of a major cultural shift. A beautifully written, compelling historical sociology based on subtly connected case studies that documents the rise of the "right to know" in American culture from the late 1950s to the 1970s.

The old adage "Can't tell a book by the cover" certainly held true for the second of Bell's well-written accounts of hunting the African elephant. Unlike his other titles, this book covers a single year long adventure into what was then, the uncharted Karamojo region of central Africa. Bell gives a first hand account of camp life, native interactions, jungle politics and the unyielding search for premium elephant country. To quote from his descriptions of the trip, "this was a hunting safari, first and last". As a result, his writing does not suffer from the slow sections that force less experienced authors to embellish or referencing the age-old ballistic tables from the Birmingham Proof House. Soon after beginning, I understood that Bell did not act or plan on anything that didn't fit in with his goal of hunting elephants. This relentless focus at a time when there were complete regions of Africa that no European man had ventured through, enabled him to emerge in good health and spirits after bagging one hundred eighty elephant in fourteen months. Compare this to the other successful ivory hunters of the period who averaged between seventeen to twenty-five elephant per year and you begin to understand why he was considered the absolute best at his profession. Karamojo Safari is among my favorite titles for many reasons but if forced to choose one then it would have to be Bell's ability to describe the feelings and passions associated with hunting in general. Clearly, he loved hunting in Africa and this enabled him to be consistently successful. A century ago at the end of his life, it was not only Walter's ability with a rifle that what made him both rich and famous, but also his skill with the pen that has ultimately maintained his legendary status making Karamojo Safari a classic Africana title.

By New York Times best-selling author Bob Mayer writing as Robert Doherty (author of the best-selling Area 51 series)

Over 1,000,000 copies sold! Amazon Hot 100 in print. Amazon Top 10 in Thriller.

What if the Shadow that destroyed Atlantis 10,000 years ago, comes back to threaten our present world? A war beyond time. An enemy beyond space. A thriller beyond your wildest dreams.

Three areas on the Earth's surface defy explanation: the Bermuda Triangle, the Devil's Sea of Japan, and a small region of Cambodia. Inside these realms, planes have disappeared, ships have vanished, and, in Cambodia, an entire civilization has been lost leaving behind Angkor Wat. In the present, former Green Beret Eric Dane teams up with the mysterious Sin Fen, a woman with powers he can't quite understand to fight the dark Shadow threatening the world.

In the year 1,000 AD, a fearsome Viking Warrior, must protect a Seer from Valkyries, Kraken and other forces of legend and help her on a quest that connects through mysterious gates to Dane's battle in the present. All around the planet, at the junction of ley lines, and where tectonic plates join, black gates are opening, letting the dark Shadow into our world, threatening the very planet itself. Can Dane, Sin Fen, the Viking and the Seer, combine forces across a millennium to save the planet?

If you enjoyed LOST, you'll love this book and be amazed at the similarities in concept (although this book was published before Lost).

Good storyline, Unbeeleevibul umounnt ov speling errurz.
By Derek Hall
I've always loved Doherty's books. And this book, Atlantis - Bermuda Triangle - has a great storyline.

Here's the problem - it is unbelievable how many spelling errors there are in the Kindle version of this novel. I'm not exaggerating when I say that you can hardly get through 3 pages on-screen without finding one. Now, I'm no professional proofreader (maybe I should be), but that many errors is inexcusable. It completely disrupts the flow of the book, your brain having to decipher what in the world you just read.

And twice, believe it or not, the book had the wrong character talking! In a conversation between Dane and Sin Fen, all of a sudden Ariana was speaking, even though she wasn't in the "scene." Then it reverted back to Sin Fen. The second had a recently-dead captain speaking (about himself, I might add), then reverted back to the one that the reader KNEW to be alive and in the current conversation. I mean, c'mon, proofreaders...seriously?

I'd recommend this book to Doherty fans, but be prepared to jump through some mental hoops as you navigate the ungodly amount of errors.

For conspiracy enthusiasists

CIA agent Foreman meets with former Green Beret Eric Dane and apparent agent Sin Fen to discuss the Shadows. No one knows much about these invaders that try to enter the earth's surface through scattered gates such as those found in the Bermuda Triangle, Cambodia's Angkor, and Japan's Devil Sea. However, Forman worries that the enemy now possesses nuclear missile capability as the USS Wyoming vanished in the Bermuda Triangle gate.

The Shadows send nuclear missiles that strike the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where two tectonic plates lie. Apparently, the Shadows plan to cause pandemic destruction to a degree that the planet has not felt since the collapse of Atlantis in 10,000 BC. Dane and Fen must find the long lost "shield" that will protect the planet if humanity is to survive an enemy that wants to end mankind's reign.

ATLANTIS: BERMUDA TRIANGLE is an exciting military science fiction work that will please fans of non-stop action thrillers. Though Greg Donegan adds a little bit of this mythology and that myth into his mix, the tale remains entertainingly fun as long as the reader allows his or her credibility to be parked on the sidelines. Action, action, and more action is the theme of this plot as Dane and his forces try to stop an enemy whose long term strategic vision (thousands of years) is the mass destruction of Homo sapiens.
