I find this a very useful text for an introductory course that I teach called 'Environment and People.' It is clear and straightforward, and yet, it is not overly simplified. It traces how resources have been used and pollution created throughout the historical development of the U.S., while reviewing the individual, organized, and institutional responses to the environmental problems created. With the addition of a new chapter on the environmental policies of the George W. Bush administration, and the new international political context in which emerging global environmental problems must now be addressed, the book provides an excellent overview for introductory courses on environmental history, politics, and policy. Knowledgeable author presents uncompromising negatives in "this is the way it is" style.

Kline, a Professor of Environmental, British Empire, and African history, offers a no-equivocation review of American environmental history. Unusually versed in history and philosophy, Kline opens his account with quotes from European philosophers and theologians, emphasizing that Calvin saw prosperity as a sign of a godly life. A recurring theme, the acquisitive, exploitative nature of the immigrants, whose motivation was to dominate nature, is presented in a quote from historian Roderick Nash.

"A massive assault was directed at the new world environment was directed at the New World in the name of civilization and Christianity. Progress became synonymous with exploitation. Man slashed the earth in search of raw materials."

Kline provides uncommon, acerbic quotes from well known people. For example, Roger Williams, often remembered as a benign and tolerant founder of Rhode Island is quoted, speaking of the Bay Colonists: "They have a depraved appetite after .....great portions of land."

And from John Muir: Awakening from the stupefying effects of the vice of overindustry and the deadly apathy of luxury.....

Many of the chapter headings also express a negative attitude toward the materialistic side of American society. As expected he does give credit to Muir, George Perkins Marsh, the author of "Man and Nature" (1864), warning Americans about following the pathway of earlier civilizations that declined when they destroyed their environment, Theodore Roosevelt, Carl Schurz the 19th Century reformer, and other persons with progressive orientations.

Let me acknowledge that personal research has led me to understand that Kline is right about many of the things he criticizes. I was not aware of many of them earlier in my life because like many Americans, the information I was exposed to avoided serious problems and unpleasantness. However, I also feel uncomfortable about his book for three reasons. His style leans toward dogmatism and opinionatedness. No sense of uncertainty, search for balance or eye for positives in American society. If people advocate for the environment they are good. If their achievements are in economic or other areas they either don't exist or are bad. Finally I caught at least one questionable technical assertion - that American Indians arrived in North America via the Berling Straits from 40,000-15,000 years BCE. A friend and a leading expert on early-man history for the U.S. has told me that while claims have been made there is no convincing proof and certainly no professional consensus supporting such numbers. Getting out on a limb with arbitrary or speculative claims isn't considered professional among historians.

Kline's clear and definitive style, plus his aggressive environmentalism has apparently won him big enough audiences to get his book to fourth edition. But I don't think he's healthy for the nation. He certainly won't make environmentalists out of conservatives or those who value their productive skills (maybe also those struggling to make ends meet). And increasing the antagonism of environmentalists won't bring this nation to harmony.

Finally, he has completely overlooked other societies like Scandinavian nations that have become ranked world leaders in environmental performance and policy - while they have simultaneously maintained robust industries and economies. In fact, the latter is necessary to support the former - as former Norwegian Environmental Minister and Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland has pointed out. Only prosperous societies can muster the intensive research and investment required to replace fossil fuels by renewable energies, and otherwise combat the effects of global climate change. Internal battles over environmental policy have contributed to the U.S. moving from an international leader in environmental policy in 1970 to 32nd in 2014 (ranking by the Yale-Columbia EPI index).

Overly simplistic and generalized interpretations, besides promoting continuing polarization and conflict also obscure important facts about U.S. environmental history, such as radically different land use history and policies in different parts of the U.S. The original colonies adapted land and water use and management policies inherited from nations from which the immigrants came. In contrast, after introduction of the spoils (patronage) system and ensuing and turnover in federal appointments in the Jackson administration inhibited the development of stable and professional federal administrative structures. As a result, after the 1849 California gold rush water use became a chaotic, first-come first serve affair; lingering effects of which affect California's current water crisis.

Conditions in the West also contrast with more advanced land management traditions brought by German and Scandinavian settlers in the North Central states. Influence of the Progressive movement in the late 19th Century caused these states to develop advanced public health and land use policies that kept pace with scientific developments.

The complex and monolithic environmental laws of the 1970s achieved short-term successes in curbing pollution but at the cost of inhibiting extension of local and state environmental management skills characteristic of leading European nations, and loss of creativity, efficiency, and flexible adaptation to new scientific and policy developments. Thus, whereas the U.S. was an international leader in environment in 1970, by 2014 the Yale-Columbia EPI index of environmental performance rated the U.S. 32nd among ranked nations.

It was a good overview, but...

The book, as intended, gives a nice overview of the history of ecology, environmentalism, and (to a point) environmental history -- not always one in the same as the rest. The writing is excellent and I'm fine with his arguments, even though I don't always agree with them. However, he often strays into political and social history for no apparent reason. At other times, he neglects large issues associated with presidents that may/may not have affected budget issues regarding environmentalism -- which is often at the core of his argument -- I think. That is another thing, his thesis seems to come and go throughout the book, which is odd. Again, I don't hate this book and I think if you are looking for an overview, it isn't all that bad. In fact, it might be a good book to compliment other books on this subject. In the end, though, I'd prefer Ted Steinberg's "Down to Earth" over this -- although they are tackling different forms of environmental history. Still, I'd prefer Steinberg.

The Psoas Book: Keys to Core Awareness and Self-Care

In this book, Liz Koch brings together information and insight about the iliopsoas muscle that you can't find anywhere else.
As a professional bodyworker and movement educator for over 25 years, I've met many people - clients, chiropractors, physical therapists, dancers, practitioners of yoga and other somatic therapists - who recognize the importance of the psoas muscle for optimal postural alignment, back health, and over-all well-being. Very few of them, however, can explain the significant and complex relationships that the psoas has with other muscle groups, with our internal organs, and with our emotional experience. And even fewer know how to adequately release their own psoas tension, to fascilitate optimal psoas tone, or to teach others these essential skills.
Liz Koch has spent over 20 years exploring this muscle and its influence, and she generously shares her extraordinary discoveries with us in her book. There are many drawings that help to clarify the text, which not only covers the basics, like location and function of the psoas, but extends into self-care exercises and application of these ideas to everyday considerations, like what kind of shoes or chairs or sports can support psoas health. There's also an entire section addressing the role of the psoas in women's cycles, pregnancy and menopause.

Right on the mark!

This book places a plethora of information around a very specific subject right at your fingertips. I have discovered much information that I can use on my own body as I move to eliminate low back pain. As a mother I found it very informative in regards to allowing children to develop at their own pace; why not to put them in exersaucers, etc from the perspective of the psoas muscle. It is definitely something else to consider if you are experiencing low back pain, menstrual cramps, infertility, etc. Releasing the psoas will not be a cure-all for every body, but this book provides some interesting food for thought! I plan to use a lot of the information on fear and the psoas with my prenatal yoga classes as an extra tool for helping expectant parents with labor and childbirth. Admittedly an editor could address the spelling errors, etc. but the content is valuable and thought-provoking if you can simply release projecting perfectionism onto the author and appreciate her hard work, 20+ years of experience with and passion for this very important muscle!

Incredibly helpful

I purchased this supplement for use with the textbook Business Associations, Cases and Materials on Agency, Partnerships, and Corporations (University Casebooks) and found it to be a fabulous choice for learning the Agency and Partnership material of this course. The problems were very well written and seemed to be on the type of information we were eventually tested on. However, this supplement only includes information on LLCs, which was inadequate for the Corporations material of the casebook; because of this, I would recommend a different supplement for Corporations-related help.

Disappointed by this offering

I am normally a huge fan of E&E - they're the only reason I made it through my first year Civ Pro class unscathed - but this one was not nearly as helpful. For a general Business Enterprises broad survey type course which most schools offer, this is ridiculously detailed and contains way too much extraneous information. It tries to cover both the UPA and RUPA side-by-side, which necessitates two explanations for every example and can get pretty confusing at times. I can see how this may have limited usefulness for bar preparation if you need the UPA info for your jurisdiction, but your state will probably be getting with the program soon anyway.

That said, it's not the worst supplement I've ever used, and if there's one or two concepts that you need clarification on, this book does a fair job. I thought it was a pretty poor offering for the normally great E&E series, but it's probably still on par with other supplements that are out there.

Great book for Agency

Our class had an instructor who didn't really teach us the class but expected us to know the subject. I really didn't use this book until the middle of the semester but it "saved my life" in the class. To me, what was really helpful was the breakdown of the important areas, such as Respondeat Superior and the powers to bind. This author did a better job in teaching me than my instructor.

The most important area of the book is the ability to practice the essays using the examples given. If you know you are going to be tested on a particular subject within the area of agency. Use ALL the examples given for your practice tests. Most likely you get to practice the fact pattern that will be on the test. Good luck.

Profound, Incredible, Amazing, Beautiful...etc.

Snarled by L.L. Collins. Wow, what a powerful, exceptionally beautiful emotional read! Seriously, if triggers of mental health issues, thoughts of suicide or if you were or are a child who grew up in foster care this may not be the read for you. If you're not, I advise all to read this novel. Incredible, there aren't enough positive words I have for this read.This author expressed clearly what it's like to go through life with such tragedy and hardship. I do not know anyone who's suffered closed to what Beau went through but through L.L.'s words it gives you a clear and precise incling. Beau is a beautiful man inside and out, whether you like tattoos or piercings is irrelevant, do not judge him by that please and definitely do not judge him by what you see on the cover design. Once you read his story, read what happens after he meets April, see what causes him to down spiral and how his family handles it? Amazing, download now you'll see for yourself, there's no other way to describe the outcome as phenomenal. This is more than a HEA, there really are no words for how profound this story is and I'm so grateful I stumbled onto this book, that L.L. shared her talent with us. This book is nothing but pure talent. If there were typos I don't remember them because the story was that powerful, besides I'm not the grammar police and don't wish to be. I'm not picky, I don't read books with a fine toothpick, as long as it's legible, mistakes or not, I feel the author shared her work with us and diligently worked very hard so I can choose not to judge and am willing to overlook a lot. This is my theory with all authors not just this one. I was not asked to write a review or paid to. I do not know this author and am not a friend, this may be the only time I've read something by her.

Sweet, sizzling romance

This is a great little read. It's well written and edited and has all the elements of a good spanking romance: rugged, handsome man; naughty damsel in distress; and some sizzling spanking scenes. I found myself actually laughing out loud twice, which is rare. Once was when the bratty heroine (Tammy) shakes Chase's soda out of spite and puts it back in the fridge. The other was her response to being informed she would be punished: "You mean like docking my pay?" Delightful!

BRILLIANT - everything you need!

I have been a self taught Photoshop user amongst other specific textile and other CAD design software for many years, but always known there was so much more in Photoshop that I just didn't know where to begin with. Indfact I was almost quite intimidated by parts of it! I did my research amongst freelance textile designers and everyone that had this book RAVED about it and the author, without exception.

I have only sat with it for one night so far and even on the first chapter on setting preferences I've had eureka moments! I'm already on section 8 and learnt so much! I'm almost embarrassed to admit some of the little things I've struggled with that I could have avoided all this time! OK there are a lot of things in the book I do already know, but just scanning the chapters in the index and flicking through the pages I am already feeling so much more confident and inspired to work my way through the book and the sections that I am really keen to understand. I recommend, as the author suggests, to work through it all methodically, as already I see there a load of little gems in each section that it would be easy to miss. Its written by a textile designer for textile designers and thats whats been missing from all the other manuals I've struggled with. Sections on colour reduction and separation are exactly what you need that are not in other books (that I have seen).

I enjoy the personable way it is written... makes you feel confident that the author is there with you and helping you along. I got the CS6 version even though I don't have that version yet, but pleased to see there are also notes in there that are helpful for earlier versions. I bought my copy direct from the author and I can't thank him enough for the support and encouragement despite the fact I am on the other side of the Atlantic.

200% recommend this book to anyone needing help with Photoshop for pattern design.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 for Textile Design

Having just upgraded my software to CS6 i have found this Publication by Frederick L. Chipkin of Origin inc. an invaluable source of information.This new publication contains an additional 59 pages over the CS4 version, some pages addressing the little quirks in CS6 including very useful advice on the interface.
This is the third publication i have purchase from this author the initial one being for CS2, then CS4 and finally this current new work - I would have been lost without these books.

About the Author
Rodney Stark began his career as a newspaper reporter. Following a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he received his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. He left Berkeley to become Professor of Sociology and of Comparative Religion at the University of Washington. IN 2004 he joined the faculty of Baylor University where he services as Co-Director of the Institute of Studies of Religion. He has published 32 books and more than 160 scholarly articles.

Katie Corcoran is a Baylor University ISR Post-Doctoral Fellow joining ISR after receiving her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington in 2012. Corcoran is a theoretical generalist who studies social groups and networks as links between macro-structures and micro-attitudes and behaviors. To te4st theoretical predictions, she draws on individual-level, cross-organizational, regional, and national data and uses advanced quantitative methodologies. In an ongoing collaboration, including a book under contract with Oxford University Press, Corcoran explores the importance of emotionally charged rituals and charismatic leaders for explaining the success and vitality of American mega-churches.

'Religious Hostility' is an academic study of religious-inspired violence that occurred during 2012. Its timeliness couldn't be better, and it is an invaluable antidote to those who would white-wash what is going on in the Middle East. Surveys (mostly conducted by Pew Research) and data-collection are the authors' tools to achieve objectivity. Readers will learn that Muslims present a serious problem world-wide, and that U.S. attempts to change the Middle-East have been laughable, at best. Concerns over Islamophobia often prevent officials from acknowledging attacks as religious motivated.

Egyptians are overwhelmingly opposed to secular rule - 67% want the country ruled entirely in accord with Sharia law, and only 2% want secular rule. (Saudi Arabians are 72% behind Sharia law, Afghans 67%, 65% for Pakistan and Jordan.) Almost 90% of Egyptians favor the death penalty for Muslims who convert to another religion (75% in Pakistan, 79% in Afghanistan, 83% in Jordan.) Many believe Sharia law should apply to all - not just Muslims; about 40% support 'honor killings' - with little difference between those with less than a high-school education and college graduates. Relations among various Muslim sects are so bitter that violence erupts when official repression weakens.

There are now about 1.2 billion active Christians, 1 billion Muslims, 700 million Hindus, 143 million Buddhists, 3.1 million Jews. In 2012, nearly all religious attacks involved Muslim attackers, the rest were almost all Buddhists, except for three by Christians. Deaths: 3,774 Muslims, 1,045 Christians, 110 Buddhists, 23 Jews, 21 Hindus, and 53 secular. Most of the 801 Muslim attacks took place in Pakistan (267), with Iraq (119), Nigeria (106), Thailand (52), Afghanistan (27), and Yemen (22) lagging behind.

Praise for Hitler's treatment of the Jews is considered non-controversial in Muslim nations. Textbooks in Saudi Arabia are quite derogatory of Jews and Christians.

A 2011 Pew Research Survey found only 28% of Lebanese Muslims believed Arabs were behind 9/11, 9% of Turks. Almost half (43%) of Palestinians Muslims thought 9/11 was justified, 22% in Iraq, 21% in Saudi Arabia, 10% in Iran. Eight percent of American Muslims support suicide bombings in defense of Islam, about the same proportion as in France and Great Britain.

In Afghanistan, 60% of Muslims approve of honor killings, with 41% in Jordan, Lebanon, and Pakistan, 38% in Egypt, 37% in Palestine, and 18% in Turkey. Most Muslim nations are unwilling to prosecute these cases. In 2012 Pakistan, 913 are known to have been killed for such - 191 for marrying without family approval (Hindus and Sikhs also, but most by Muslims). The Ottoman Empire prohibited mechanical clocks and printing presses for centuries - the ways of Mohammed were seen as superior.

Religious police in Saudi Arabia enforce Sharia law on all. Burma is Buddhist and used its army to burn and drive out Christians and Muslims; it is illegal to import Bibles Qur'ans, or to rebuild churches or mosques.

Other than Burma, North Korea, Vietnam, and China - all of the most repressive religious nations are Muslim. Leading imams emphasize that democracy is another form of Western decadence and incompatible with Islam.

The French government has designated 173 religious groups (includes most Evangelical Protestants) as problematic - allowing extra taxes, employment discrimination. Belgium has 89.

Facts should still matter

Stark & Corcoran lay out ample evidence and prove how critically important religion is to diverse global populations in this age of advanced scientific and social engineering. They do as good a job as is possible analyzing the available data, which is necessarily incomplete. But, more importantly, they alert us to the need for real data, which in this case is staggering, to replace guesswork with facts. As religious hostility continues to determine a dominate human condition in this world, those looking for data to support claims of a peaceful Islam will be disappointed.

This book should be of interest to people who want to better understand the worldwide religious hostility. This book takes the available data worldwide and presents the data and analysis of the data. It addresses the highest level of religion, and does not get down into the different sects of Christianity, or Islam etc.

Hated of the Jews is becoming a widespread problem in many countries around the world.

The biggest issue today in religious hostility is the Muslims killing Christians, or driving them out from their ancient homelands.

I recommend this book as having hard data on this issue, and not jut opinions as are frequently provided. This book is very informative, but is limited by he world wide data collected over the years. More data, and more detailed data would help.

Duchess of Devonshire and English Society

Georgiana - Duchess of Devonshire is a well documented research work by Amanda Foreman. She writes well and adds the amusing sidelights of English Society while endeavoring to objectively present the real person Georgiana Spencer. She names names! Some of the 'Ton' of society were scoundrels to say the least, but we have those in most societies today. What Ms. Foreman does is to show the blatant exhibitionism of the fast set in the mid to late 1800's in England. For those especially in the U.S.A. this work will help them understand how customs have changed with each passing generation.

I read this book some time ago when it was first published. I heard an interview with the author on NPR and she said that Georgiana was a relative and she became absolutely obsessed with her life while writing the book. It is nonfiction based on the life of Georgiana and it was fascinating. I love to read and I have to say that this is one of my all time favorite books. What a remarkable woman Georgiana was, constrained by the period of time she lived in (18th century England) and the man she was married to. I highly recommend this book. I was glad to see that it is being made into a movie simply because this may lead to more people reading the book. I wonder if the movie will do the book justice. This book is a serious biography by a gifted author, but with a subject matter so engaging that it reads like fiction.

Great Bio reassess role of aristocratic women in the 18th Centruy

If I hadn't enjoyed Foreman's A World on Fire I probably would not have picked Georgiana off the second-hand bookstore shelf. So glad I did. Am looking forward to her next bio-history.

At first glance Georgiana resembles an 18th C version of Lady Diana Spencer, the late Princess of Wales. She was Diana's great-great-great-great aunt and they had a host of traits in common. Each married a man who did not love her and brought an unseen "third party" to the altar. Both were fashion icons, subjects of gossip columns in which they were alternately loved and lampooned, great givers to charity, and brilliant at the art of image making and public relations. On the dark side, they were emotionally crippled by self-doubt which manifested as an eating disorder (Diana) and addiction to risk (both of them).

Georgiana's life, however, makes a far more interesting study than Diana's. Our familiarity with Victorian notions of women's "seen but not heard" social roles, as well as historical models that concentrate on the lives of the middle and working classes, has all but obscured the unique social and political power held by 18th century aristocratic women, not to mention the surprisingly hedonistic lives they were able to live. With Georgiana, Foreman makes a case for historians to re-examine the "separate spheres" model of feminist history, which renders the lives of aristocratic women irrelevant, thereby diminishing our understanding of historical gender roles and relations.

But don't let me lead you into thinking Georgiana is a boring, academic thesis. Far from it. Foreman creates a good balance between engaging storytelling and academic rigor, and Georgiana's life is one worth telling.
