Thank God for Dr Walser

This book, in my opinion, is a must for kidney patients. Well written and easy to understand, it gave me a much better understanding of CKD and what I need to do to live a longer and healthier life. Dialysis is not something I want to experience.

After being diagnosed with CKD 18 months ago (stage 3)I did a lot of research on diet, etc. and happened upon Dr. Walser's book. With the approval of my nephrologist, I started using the amino acid suppliments in place of most of my dietary protein. My GFR went from 45 to 75 in three months. Very heartening!

Most of the recipe books for CKD patients, in my opinion, offer a nutritionally deficient regimen and many seemed more like recipe books for developing diabetes. Being a person who likes whole foods, I decided to create my own diet regimen. I bought a copy of DietPro (a diet program that tracks food nutrition by weight) for my computer, a digital food scale, some Calwood Nutritionals amino acid powders and some of the other nutritional suppliments Dr Walser recommended. Since I'm still in the earlier stages of CKD, some days I still eat a small amount of animal protein with my evening meal, but limit it to under 4 ounces raw. I keep my potassium at 2000-3000 mg, phosphorus at 1500-1000 and sodium to under 1500 daily.

It wasn't easy at first, but I'm used to it now. It takes a bit of time to set up the menu plan initially, but after that I spend about 15 minutes a day on DietPro working out my daily menu. My nephrologist says I'm doing very well and says he wishes more of his patients took a more active interest in managing their CKD. My bun creatine levels have improved and my blood potassium levels have dropped to the normal range. The swelling in my ankles and hands is pretty much gone too.

This book helped me delay dialysis

Too bad some didn't read the book. The premise is you supplement the low protein diet with amino acids that the body can use in place of what protein supplies without the kidneys having to be overloaded. I personally have delayed dialysis for 3 years on a 40 gram protein diet, based in part on advice from this book, but I'm not using amino acids yet. I also saw a nutritionist. None of my doctors, from Tufts to Mayo, suggested this dietary change, and expected me to require a transplant or dialysis long before this. I credit a low protein diet for slowing my kidney failure, but see my doctors as regularly as they require.

DONT let publishing date steer you away. .

... just because info was published a few years back doesnt mean it isnt incredibly useful!

Not only does this give very detailed explanations of the kidneys and causes of diseases/ injury.. but it gives useful things you can do to help ... things your doctors dont bother with like simple baking soda ( which we had read about and suggested..even providing links to info on it... to which the doctors said Absolutely NO!!..then proceded to put it in iv the very next day!!??! )
Later after finding who ordered it..we found it was the hospitalist who then wrote the rx for it ( but u can buy pills on Amazon).. You really have to fight to get some docs to listen!
Anyway even though the diet plans and some of the foods might not work for you..
they are exampled.. my suggestion is to make up your own.. in a nutshell Less protein ( especially animal)..even if you dont count every gram at first you could at least leave half in your plate..only have it certain days or meals etc...and take complete essential aminos in pill form ( now foods on amazon are reasonably priced)..

We bought this for a family member who was guaged at 12% .. he did have a huge prostate that they just did surgery on. .which no doubt exacerbated his kidneys which were damage from side effect of med years ago..
He also has found that the d3 his docs pushed was too much ( @first we werent sure of this effect but googled it and did find d3 increases creatinine..also in this book it says " too much and your kidneys will suffer the consequence s)
So needles to say they wanted dialysis ( as they did last year during pneumonia)
He doesn't want it possibly ever but hed like to wait at very least a year to get this d out of him ( he fully understands what waiting could mean)..
Being that the pressure of the prostate and loss of blood from it as well the d and being acidic had to make things worse.. we are hopeful that having the surgery..adding baking soda and following tips in this book as well as other natural things ( like celery seed for b.p...blackstrap molasses for iron/ calcium..has potassium but since natural and balanced superfood body should handle it well... ylang ylang e.oil etc)
could all help bring him back to a better level where he could stay as long as possible!
SO IF YOUR ON THE FENCE..SERIOUSLY ITS 12 BUX!
I EVEN BOUGHT TWO USED COPIES FOR A DOLLAR PLUS 3.95 SHIPP SO HE COULD HAVE ONE AND WE COULD TOO
MONEY WELL SPENT FOR MORE INFO THAN ANY DOC HAS GIVEN US !!!

About the Author
Dr Graham Cairns, UK, 1971, is an academic and author in the field of architecture who has written extensively on film, advertising and political communication. He has held Visiting Professor positions at universities in Spain, the UK, Mexico, the Gambia, South Africa and the US. He has worked in architectural studios in London and Hong Kong and previously founded and ran a performing arts group, Hybrid Artworks, that specialised in video installation and performance writing.

He is author and editor of: El arquitecto detrás de la cámara, Abada Editores, Madrid, 2007; Deciphering Art, Architecture and Advertising; selling to the sophisticated Consumer, Libri, Publishing, London, 2010; Reinventing Architecture and Interiors - a socio-political view of building adpatation. Architecture of the screen

This book sets out to upturn some conventions about how architecture appropriates film. It states that it turns a scenography approach into a cinematographic one. It does. I found it revealing in its general theme and in its details. The different (and very different) sections, are each full of fascinating details and unexpected connections between film, architecture, philosophy, art etc. Sometimes, it goes too far and the author let's his range of knowledge get in the way of a clear argument. But the range of subjects linked into the overall theme is impressive. It's very well and clearly written despite using some obscure references - and the footnotes are useful in explaining some theoretic concepts and technical issues. It's equally about film and architecture and doesn't seem to favour one or the other. Well worth the time (and sometimes difficulty) in reading.

I wrote this book as an inexpensive resource for students taking a college course entitled "Math for the Liberal Arts," "Math for Poets," or any other such basic course designed to satisfy the general education math requirement for graduation. This was a difficult task because these courses cover a very wide variety of topics: graphs, sets, logic, voting, fair division, fractals, etc. I covered all of these and more, though it is possible that your professor might include one or two topics not covered by this book.

I have taught a Math for the Liberal Arts course many times at MCLA, a small state college in Massachusetts, so I have a fairly solid understanding of the sorts of students enrolled in these classes. Often, these students have been taught mathematics poorly in the past, and thus have a very negative opinion of it. Other students have a decent grasp of the basics, but are more interested in a wide survey of mathematics than a course on a single topic (calculus, statistics, etc.). With this audience in mind, I took care to include brief, clear explanations for the all the topics covered in the book. Formulas without explanations can be bewildering, but long-winded mathematical ramblings can be even worse.

Anyone who picks up this book ought to be able to learn useful and important mathematical concepts in a very short period of time, even if that person has only a basic understanding of arithmetic and algebra. This book ought to be a benefit for a person currently taking a course like Math for the Liberal Arts. While this book does not cover any advanced mathematics topics completely, it will also serve as a gentle introduction to geometry, statistics, trigonometry, and precalculus.

As well, this book introduces a number of advanced and interesting results in mathematics, for example: Russell's paradox, Godel's Theorem, Cantor's diagonal proof, non-Euclidean geometry, the fourth dimension, fractals, and the traveling salesman problem.

Male-focused portrait of friends struggling with fatherhood

The king of sprawling, feels-like-autobiography, multi-cast graphic novel soap operas, Alex Robinson, has returned with Our Expanding Universe. It’s dubbed a “spiritual sequel” to his best-known Box Office Poison, and that’s an accurate comparison. The characters aren’t the same, but they’re recognizable in the same ways the BOP cast were. The significant difference is that Our Expanding Universe features older adults. Instead of wondering when their lives will get started, these characters are dealing with impending parenthood and feeling trapped where they’ve ended up.

Robinson’s stark scenes and unflattering caricatures have the feel of a sketchbook, peering in when people aren’t aware they’re being observed (or they might present themselves more optimistically). Like many of the Great American Novels and their explorations of the male psyche this work evokes, the focus is on the guys.

The few female characters aren’t nearly as well-developed or relatable, and sometimes, they descend into cliche. There are some non-guy scenes, but they revolve around family members and pressure to have babies and what the guys are doing. The only chapter with only women even switches from comics to illustrated script (possibly because drawing all their conversations would have made the book twice as long). It stood out to me because Robinson does such a great job keeping his many conversations among the guys visually interesting. That said, if you’re ok knowing this is a portrait of how men deal with parenthood, the portrayals are illuminating when it comes to how a particular male age group struggles with growing up.

The stories are told in a series of chapter vignettes. Billy, manager of a doggy day care, and Marcy are trying to get pregnant, although Billy seems much less interested. His friend Scott and his wife Ritu have a toddler and another on the way. The third guy, Brownie, is single and complaining about first dates. He reviews video games and smokes a lot while contemplating hooking up with his high school crush.

They all live in Brooklyn, so life is about meeting for foursquare and talking about nannies. No matter how old they get, the guys still think about whatever women they see in terms of wanting to get phone numbers and resemblances to previous girlfriends. Ultimately, Robinson does a great job covering all the father’s facets of choosing to reproduce: the stress, the struggle with feeling like an adult, the question of what growing up means, the societal pressure, and even the love.

Our Expanding Universe is an excellent literary graphic novel, demonstrating what can be done with the form to tell mature, challenging stories, albeit in the tradition of male-focused comics. Or you can just enjoy it for discussions like Herschel’s theory of child-raising: “Think of parenthood as a twenty year drug trip. It has highs and lows, makes you act bats*** crazy, and forever alters how you experience the world.” (The publisher provided a review copy. Review previously posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

Brilliantly-crafted, but a bit too familiar

I've liked all of Alex Robinson's previous graphic novels, but had mixed feelings about this one. It struck me as an extremely well-crafted version of a story that I've seen many times before. The book revolves around three men, longtime friends, who are struggling with the onset of adult responsibilities. They get together to drink and play video games, wax nostalgic over their freewheeling youth, and stress out over their marriages and children. Many complications ensue, and they learn to cope (or not) with life's challenges. The guys come across as so immature and selfish and irresponsible that I found it hard to care about whether they could turn themselves around. There's certainly some truth to the cliche of the overgrown man-child who struggles to become a functional adult, but it's a trope that's been run into the ground lately, and I didn't feel like Robinson had much new to add.

On the other hand, on a purely technical level, the book is a masterpiece of storytelling. It's 250 pages of nothing but conversations, but there's not a visually dull moment in it. There's all kinds of clever and imaginative staging, and the characters are really well "acted" -- their body language and expressions reveal as much as their dialogue. Robinson's eye for background detail really brings the Brooklyn setting to life. So I definitely enjoyed it on that level, even if the storyline didn't grab me.

I would say, if you're interested in a really well-drawn slice-of-life story, and aren't completely burned out on tales of "Peter Pan Syndrome", then the book is definitely worth picking up.

It started slow, but slowly hooked me in with great art and a story of how our lives can change

'Our Expanding Universe' by Alex Robinson is a slice of life graphic novel about growing up, changing and making room in your life for what's important.

The book follows three men named Scotty, Billy and Brownie. Billy is our main character and he's got trepidations about having a child with his wife. Scotty is about to have his second kid, but he's got some other secrets that he's keeping, even from his friends. Brownie is divorced without kids and happy in his life of video games and pot smoking. We get to know the women also, and the stories evolve and change. Throughout the comics are themes of cosmic events which show how how small our lives are and how life goes on. There is a sequence in a planetarium that I just loved.

It's a slow moving story, and I wasn't sure aboutit at first, but as the story progressed, it hooked me in. It's probably not that original, but Alex Robinson's cartoon style was really great. It's probably not for everyone, but I found myself really liking it.

Albright is not out to settle scores (her criticisms of colleagues are mild at worst) and seems, on balance, pleased with the foreign-policy record of the Clinton Administration. This might have made a dull book, were it not for Albright's appealing character—personally ingenuous but professionally sophisticated, earnest but hard-nosed. The candid memoirs of the first woman Secretary of State

"Madam Secretary" presents the memoirs of Madeleine Albright, the highest ranking woman in the history of U.S. government (despite what conclusions you might have reached about some of the First Ladies, Edith Galt Wilson in particular). During the eight years of the Clinton administration Albright served as U.N. ambassador and then, following the resignation of Warren Christopher, as Secretary of State. Half of "Madam Secretary" is devoted to that period of her life, while the rest tells the story of how a refugee from Czechoslovakia eventually became the first woman Secretary of State in American history and one of the most admired public figures of recent years (she was confirmed 99-0 by the Senate). The result is a book that is both candid and insightful. The memoirs of any Secretary of State are going to be of importance, but "Madam Secretary" is actually a good read.
Madeleine Korbel Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1937. Her father was an official in the Czech government-in-exile who fled to London, where she remembers enduring the blitz. Her father served in several diplomatic posts after World War II and when the Communists took over Czechoslovakia in 1948 he sent his family to the United States, where he ended up running the School of International Studies at the University of Denver (where one of his prize students was Condolezza Rice). On the personal side of the ledger Albright talks about her marriage to "Newsday" scion Joe Albright, which ended in divorce, raising her three daughters, and learning late in her life that her Jewish grandparents had died in Nazi concentration camps. Earning her doctorate from Columbia, Albright worked her way from being Edmund Muskie's senior legislative assistant to work for National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brezinski in the Carter Administration. When the Democrats returned to the White House in 1992, Albright moved into the upper stratosphere of American diplomacy where she proved herself to be a Wilsonian moralist whose hero was Dean Acheson.
In the most important parts of her memoir Albright provides commentary on all of the foreign policy crises with which she was involved, from Rwanda and Serbia to North Korea and Iraq, with NATO's humanitarian intervention in Kosovo being the episode that stands out most in my mind as the one she wants to present as being paradigmatic of what the Clinton administration was trying to accomplish in terms of foreign policy. Not coincidentally, it was also the specific policy on which she was the biggest advocate and primary architect. She does not make the explicit argument, but when you read of how her family came to the United States the policy seems a logical extension of her personal story. Clearly the goal was to avert a humanitarian catastrophe and not as sign of support for the Albanian guerrillas.
You will also find Albright's views on the national and world figures with whom she had to deal, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Vaclav Havel, Vladmimir Putin, Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, Yasser Arafat, Slobodan Milosevic, and even Kim Jong-Il. Of course, a recurring theme of Albright's book is how she had to prove herself in the male-dominated world of power politics, which lends a certain power to the scene where she describes waiting for the phone call from President Clinton where he told her he wanted her to be his Secretary of State. Albright consistently places the emphasis on presenting her side of the record rather than going out of her way to defend particular policies and actions. Her position on American foreign policy is clearly implicit in her accounts, but she does not go out of her way to be an advocate.
Obviously this volume will be a primary document for assessing the foreign policy of the Clinton administration. Albright comes across as being candid and self-efacing, while also provided insights into the goals of the Clinton foreign policy. Having long ago grown tired of the public statements of any and all government officials, it was refreshing to read what it was like to play this came from someone who was actively involved and has never been burdened by being an elected official. Ome of the biggest compliments I could pay to Albright would be that this memoir comes across as being written by a real person. She might have been a diplomat, but she was not a politician (an assessment that I think applies to her successor at the State Department as well). Of course she touches on issues, such as terrorism and relations with Iraq, that are of even more importance today. "Madame Secretary" includes a pair of 16-page color and black & white photo inserts and a chronology of Albright's personal and political life. This 562-page volume will be of interest to not only Albright's personal admirers, but anyone interested in the machinations of American foreign policy in the past decade (especially if they have read Michael Dobbs' "Madeline Albright: A 20th Century Odyssey," the obvious companion volume for a presumably more objective look at the same subject).

Paving The Way to Power - A Female's Journey

If you, like me, are curious about America's foreign policy, you will find this 512 page autobiography of the first female secretary of state, good insightful reading. It is written in an easy to read manner, very detailed and inforative, and you will wonder, as I did, how this woman managed to work so many long hours for the White House, flew all over the world to meet and eat with other diplomats, and still maintain her composure. What exactly motivated her? She clearly did have the background for this job, dearly loved the power and prestige, and like her or not, you will enjoy her memoirs. Yes you will!

Strangely, after completing this long memoir which could have been considerably shortened, I discovered her ideas of freedom and democracy are actually not unlike those of Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, her successors in the Bush administration. So I wonder why then, does she sound so partisan and take little digs at them on television interviews?

Madeleine Korbel was born in 1937 in Prague. She lived in England, went to school in Switzerland for a time, and arrived with her family in America in 1948. In 1949 the Korbel family moved to Colorado. While attending Wellesley College, she became an American citizen in 1957. In 1959, after graduating, she married Joseph Albright. They had three daughter, including identical twins. She suffered a very painful divorce from Joseph Albright in 1983.

During the marriage she earned a Ph.D from Columbia University. She worked for Senator Edmund Muskie, worked on the staff of the National Security Council among other things, and somehow managed to be wife, mother, hostess, and hone her diplomatic skills while working long hours.

From 1982-1992 Madeleine served on the faculty at Georgetown University School of Foreign Serive. She served as foreign policy advisor to democrats Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis. President Clinton designated her as representative to the UN. In 1996, he appointed Ambassador Albright to serve as secretary of state during his second term.

The second part of the book details those four years from her perspective. Madam Secretary had excellent people skills, had studied various cultures thoroughly, speaks several languages, had good work habits and loved discussing world affairs with her male counterparts and of course, her place in the Clinton cabinet.

As a woman, an independent voter, a reader of American history and politics, and one who enjoys learning about the "White House" from various viewpoints over time, I recommend this memoir because it is unique. Written by a woman who experienced many ups and downs but worked her way thru them and continues to express her viewpoints on foreign policy, offers insights concerning other countries and cultures, describes just what her job entailed - well, you can make your own judgements of her, but please read this book first of all! It's a very good read.

BRILLIANT BIOPIC FROM HIGHLY CHARGED POLITICAL ANNALS

So I find myself a bit disagreeable when it comes to extolling Madeleine Albright. So what. ...
I am still fascinated by the chequered career of "Madam Secretary", who came from a Czech refugee family that first fled Hitler and then the communists. After reaching America, her zigzagging life eventually landed her in the upper echelon of American diplomacy and policy-making. This path alone makes this memoir worth every little centimeter of every frayed penny you spend on it.
This is an outspoken work, and it provides a ringside view of a world in unprecedented turbulence. No, I do not think the authors were fawning a political celeb. It contains a colorful portrait of several other big tykes -- the Clintons, Colin Powell, Jesse Helms, Vaclav Havel, Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon, King Hussein, Vladimir Putin, Slobodan Milosevic, and North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Il. All this tirade, whether your polemical filter reconciles with it or not, makes for quite an interesting read.
As regards weaving an intimate and panoramic tapestry of Madeleine's character, well the writing is fluent, tight, and very interesting. I seldom devour politically charged reminiscences with such zeal. It is clearly self-billed as a "memoir, so I did not expect it to be a highly objective analysis of political stances, if there were such a beast to begin with.

The selections are scattered across oversized pages and embellished with bright, childlike illustrations that catch the humor and hint at the solutions to the riddles. This book is so punny, kids don't realize they're learning!

I'm a preservice Language Arts teacher, and since starting my reading block have rediscovered children's books. This was one I *had* to buy. I love wordplay, so I worked it into a literary session with my student. I had planned on reading 4 selections, but she wanted to read the entire book -- so we did! I always use student enthusiasm when I can. There are poems that "teach" phonics, punctuation, spelling, etc. This is more than a grammar book masked as a fun book. It's a fun book in and of itself.

at best a simple overview

This book features many grammatical errors, small and at times blurry images, and figures that look like they were made on MS Paint. Content-wise it is a basic overview of many topics on exploration with little depth. Even the case histories give at most a paragraph about the exploration and discovery of each. If you are a layperson and want to learn about mineral exploration this will give you a broad overview, but if you are a geologist or professional in the mining industry don't waste your time.
