In this highly innovative study, Ziony Zevit argues that this is not how ancient Israelites understood the early biblical text. Drawing on such diverse disciplines as biblical studies, geography, archaeology, mythology, anthropology, biology, poetics, law, linguistics, and literary theory, he clarifies the worldview of the ancient Israelite readers during the First Temple period and elucidates what the story likely meant in its original context.

Most provocatively, he contends that our ideas about original sin are based upon misconceptions originating in the Second Temple period under the influence of Hellenism. He shows how, for Ancient Israelites, the story was really about how humans achieved ethical discernment. He argues further that Adam was not made from dust and that Eve was not made from Adam’s rib.  His study unsettles much of what has been taken for granted about the story for more than two millennia and has far-reaching implications for both literary and theological interpreters.

Ziony Zevit is Distinguished Professor of Biblical Literature and Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles. He is widely recognized for his publications in Hebrew epigraphy, biblical studies, and ancient Israelite religion.

A welcome addition to my bookshelf

This is a very well-written examination of the initial cultural context of the Eden story. Although this entails a close study of the Hebrew words, the book remains accessible to those with little to no knowledge of Hebrew. There's also plenty of interesting theories and accompanying compelling evidence that may surprise even those with decent knowledge of ancient near eastern culture and Semitic etymology. I found the explanation and re-interpretation of the word commonly read as "rib" to be particularly enlightening. Throughout it all, the text is straightforward and often quite amusing. If you're interested in biblical history or Israelite culture at all, I highly recommend this book.

First rate, and thorough

I have been "bedeviled" for decades by the traditional reading of original sin as stemming from the Garden. Professor Zevit, all in good time, addresses that reading, and in a thorough---and greatly entertaining---way, demolishes it. Much else about this famous section of Torah is also addressed, and again often in surprising ways. A great read, overall, by a first-rate scholar.

A superb, nuanced, and strikingly insightful exposition of a Biblical story (Adam & Eve) that we believe we all know so well that we don't even think about the assumptions underlying out beliefs. He balances, successfully, strictly linguistic analyses with broader views of the theological implications of his careful linguistic examinations. It's eye-opening, and appears well balanced between the interests of the scholar and the non-expert.

Good Primer for Us Newbie Authors

Author Shelley Hitz has written over 35 ebooks in her career. That number alone proves that she has had ample time and experience to perfect her writing and publishing system. She brings all the lessons she has learned in that journey together in her quick read Procrastination to Publication: How to Write a Non-fiction Kindle Book in 7 Days.

Don’t be put off by the subtitle. Although she lays out a system that anyone could use to write a short Kindle e-book in 7 days (around 10K words), the bigger lesson to draw from this book is that the steps needed to put together a solid e-book is not beyond the beginning writer. Yes, you can write a book in seven days. If that is enough time to offer an acceptable product to your potential customers is up to you.

She offers plenty of tools (from her own site) and recommendations for editing, cover design and all the parts that go into publishing. What I found most useful was her simple outlining process and the mystery she took out of the actual writing needed to get a book done in a short amount of time.

This book is recommended for those authors just starting out and will serve as a good primer for anyone looking to get their feet wet in the e-book market.

Excellent Resource for Future Indie Authors!

I read a lot of writing and self-publishing books, and at times it's hard to differentiate between them since many simply offer the same information through a new filter. Procrastination to Publication stood out in the sense that I learned something new AND enjoyed the author's voice. (That's important because it's harder to get into a book if you get bad vibes from the author). My primary interest is fiction, so I thought it would be enlightening to read more about publishing nonfiction as well; I wasn't disappointed with this one. While I didn't agree with everything Ms. Hitz said -- for example, I think it would take longer than 7 days to plan and write even a short nonfiction book, especially if you're new -- she has some great ideas and this book would be a solid start for anyone interested in self-publishing.

Antony Cummins holds an undergraduate degree in Ancient History & Archaeology and a master's degree in Neolithic Archaeology. In addition to working as a ninjutsu consultant for documentaries and other researchers, he has co-hosted television programs dedicated to the ninja. His previous works include In Search of the Ninja, True Path of the Ninja, The Secret Traditions of the Sinobi, and the Illustrated Guide to Viking Martial Arts. He splits his time between Manchester, England and Japan.

YOSHIE MINAMI earned a bachelor's degree in Linguistics from the International Christian University and has worked as a consultant for television documentaries about the ninja. As a translator, she has published True English (2009) and The True Path of the Ninja (2011). She lives in Saitama, Japan.

Fascinating book with tons of content!

I have been waiting for this translation to emerge from SOMEWHERE for the last 15 years and thanks to the Historical Ninjutsu Research Team, I finally have it. If you are a practitioner of any form of ninjutsu or a history buff, this book will not disappoint. The sheer volume of information is impressive to say the least, though keep in mind what you are receiving was never intended to be read like novel, so you can pretty much start anywhere in the book and be captivated by the information that's presented.

If you are looking for information to support your Hollywood style ninja fantasies, you won't find it here. You also will not find support for Bujinkan, Genbukan or any other ninjutsu combat systems. Clearly, shinobi of the senguko period were skilled in unarmed combat, but it wasn't until Edo era, that we began to see organized "ninja combat system." Instead what you fill find is fascinating battlefield strategy, ninja tools, fire devices, communication methods, astrology and more. There is no fluff, no candy coating...this IS ninjutsu.

What's particularly fascinating are the fairly obvious Chinese origins. There are many references to Sun Tzus Art of War throughout the text and the shinobi clearly implemented these strategies. The Ninjutsu Rearch Team's devotion to preserving historical accuracy is impressive. Perhaps not as entertaining as the shuriken hurling, straight blade wielding, bullet dodging, black costumed ninjas of the 1980's, the ninja of the 17th century were people just like us.

If you are seeking historical truth about the ninja, than this book is definitely for you...and if you are really inspired, you may even try one of the many ninja fire recipes. Surprisingly, many of the recipes require the use of mouse dung. Enjoy!

"This book is actually more than a book. It's a collection of a very famous set of volumes translated into English with additional content as well. Many ninja enthusiasts will know the Japanese original work as the "Bansenshukai" by Fujibayashi Yasutake, as it is in many way the largest collection of ninjutsu ("shinobi-no-jutsu") tactics, strategies, philosophy, and information from long ago. Throughout the past few decades, the view of what the ninja and ninjutsu is as a way of unorthodox warfare and espionage has been greatly misunderstood. Society has developed the view of the ninja as what is really a fictitious stylization. Today's so-called modern ninja schools present a "partition" or "interpretation" regarding the fighting aspects of samurai who would perform ninjutsu ("shinobi-no-samurai") and in a sense these schools show a skewed view as to what ninjutsu is/was. This book will without a doubt present what is central to ninjutsu and what is peripheral. I highly recommend this book for its content, footnotes, and very accurate translation. The writers, Antony Cummins and Yoshie Minami have done an excellent job with certain details, including the meaning of certain kanji (written characters) that carry multiple meanings when spoken the same, but written differently. Various historical circles can benefit here. If you are interested in samurai warfare, ninjutsu-specifically, or just Japanese history in general, this book is an absolute must and excellent resource. The book is also practical in modern times for developing covert strategies aimed at investigation and protection."

Definitely another superb translation and publication by Antony Cummins. The Bansenshukai is definitely the shinobi bible and contains the most information on ninjutsu and how to be a shinobi. For the first time ever it is translated in modern in english so shinobi and martial arts enthusiast can now own a personal copy and finally understand what is contained in the Bansenshukai. What an Utter Time Thief!

I bought this book to read a Black centered, Ethiopian perspective on the prophet Enoch. What a complete waste of resources! I thought I could take the warned against repetition, however, I was fed up on page 15 already - with 285 more to follow!

In principle I appreciate any unorthodox/eccentric writing style. However, sick more than 90% of the written words being comprised of quotes of other books etc. is something I do not want to experience Iver again. In fact, the number of pages of his own words would stay clearly in the single digits, if it weren't for the brief conclusion of the book. The author quotes anyone, no matter how often almost literally the very same thing. Quoting, what Enoch is, without the respective reasons. Occasionally, I begged for an explanation: "Enoch is the inventor of urban civilization." How would that be possible, in the supposed 7th generation of humankind? Would that even be a good thing, to invent the big shitty?! Some subchapters are extremely short: "Enoch the Great Authority [headline] In Levitical literature and traditions Enoch is regarded as a great authority." Followed by the source. That was it. Just to give an expression of the exquisiteness of the information. A similar subchapter is headed "Enoch the Creator's Favorite". Four pages later another "Enoch the Favorite of God". Writing exclusively in quotes unsurprisingly lead to various contradictions. Without commenting those. It also lead to omissions.

I hoped to learn something about Enoch. I definitely did not. A third of the book is entirely off the point, i.e. NOT about Enoch. But instead about the Egyptians (!) having been Black and general racism. I do agree (largely) with the author on this (though nothing is new to those who have read other African centered books on Egypt). This doesn't change the fact that there's nothing substantial about Enoch in this book instead, not even in addition.

Quelle surprise, there's racism in the world. It is largely described in such a general way, utterly unrelated to Enoch that I am still wondering, what exactly the concept of the book might have been. Though it was ok to read some examples of famous people saying something racist, just to put them on the history index. Personally I prefer not to repeat that many insults, as that qualifies as further insulting - oneself, involuntarily. As I share the sentiments in general of the author on this, I still add one star to the lowest category possible for this book. I may have added another, but even in this regard the book is flawed. To begin with, there aren't any races.

A major point of discontent I have with this book, is that the author writes things which are true, but discredits them with flawed proofs. He's saying, if one Biblical character is Black skinned, then ALL before and after in the geneology must have been also. Likely, but not necessarily. Because the Sinai is located in Egypt, and because Egypt is located in Africa, the ancient Egyptians must have been Black. Yes, they were Black, but the causal relationship escapes me. Anyway, I may add ancient Blacks once lived in eastern Asia, Scotland, Scandinavia, India, Tasmania, etc. Also the Sumerians were Black, yes. But not because they CAME from Africa, but because the area was well within the ancient Black populated world. The pre-Hebrew people descending from Abraham are described as numbering 70 when migrating into Egypt, but numbering some (3,)600,000 at the Imes of the exodus a relatively short Imes later. The author suggests that they must have mixed with Blacks and therefore HAD BECOME Black. In reality, Abraham had been Black from the beginning, as is contradictingly mentioned elsewhere. Besides, it is an urban legend that he came from Ur. (Read The Africans Who Wrote the Bible.) The names and artificial borders of continents say nothing about the skin color of the respective inhabitants at different Imes. Moses (who is not seen as Akenten/Akhenaton in this book) was black skinned, yes. But this is not provable with the magic trick in the Bible, displaying a white hand for a moment as a supposed contrast to his general phenotype color. For one thing, he was explicitly NOT the Israelites' "first great miracle worker". Simply for the reason that he taught AGAINST magic. Later scribes of the Bible misunderstood the earlier texts and misinterpreted and mistranslated various text passages into a lot of magic tricks never done. In addition, the white hand is not referring to any phenotype whiteness, but sickness whiteness, as is still overstandable from the quote provided. It is referring to leprosy. Someone "White" could have done the same "white hand magic", as "Whites" are in reality pink or beige. More about Moses read in Moses and Akhenaten: The Secret History of Egypt at the Time of the Exodus. Enoch might have been an Ethiopian (as in today's country). He was Black for sure. However not, because the Ethiopian Church still includes it in its canon. The other early churches did that as well. Ethiopia became isolated from the rest of Christianity and didn't follow subsequent doctrine changes. There are other Ethiopian apocryphs, not about Ethiopians and other Bible texts in European Bibles not referring to Europeans. The book follows the belief that every people (= phenotype) has to venerate Mary and Jesus/I-Yasus in the skin color of their own. I concur that fakings, done in order to downpress, should not be followed. However, the book's suggestion is racist in the manner that non-Black (APPEARING) people supposedly aren't INHERENTLY able to identify with a Black Jesus and that indeed different skin colors equal different peoples/races. Last not least Adam was most likely Black, yes. (That I would have to say that as a RastafarI...) No matter, how much the concept of Adam is White. Yet at the Imes of Adam, as described by the Bible and this book, humans already featured all the other phenotypes. Simply, because Adam wasn't really the first human, as can be seen in his story of further procreation. He was the first patriarch under a certain concept of humanity. So the "proof" is flawed that as the first human he must have been black skinned, even though he was. Ancient Egypt is still described as too young. Read When We Ruled: The Ancient and Medieval History of Black Civilisations.

This book doesn't only quote The Isis Papers: The Keys to the Colors, but actually recommends it, as the author Dr. Cress Welsing supposedly does a "brilliant analysis" of racism. In reality, that book is hiding grave racism (against Blacks) behind a thin veil of reversed racism. Curiously, a few pages later, historic The Willie Lynch Letter and the Making of a Slave is quoted extensively. Perfectly describing what The Isis Papers has continued EXACTLY in a modern version. In that sense, Willie Lynch was perfectly right that with his methods Blacks in America can be controlled for at least 300 years - obviously even when they are freed and perfectly aware of them.

As for the Enoch part of this book: The author takes everything literally - and by that misses the point. The mysticism of it. For example that Enoch ascended into Heaven with his body. This isn't even literally said in the story. (In fact, there are even contradictory quotes that his body was transformed into "flames".) It is just said that he didn't die. That is a tremendous difference. Other literal interpretations include people living anywhere from 365 years to capping a millennium and that God looks like a (hu)man.

There are some hostile references towards sexuality and the Greek are getting criticized for not inventing any doctrines which couldn't get enforced accordingly. For once, the Greeks have done something right, and then that's bad...

As for the sloppy presentation of the book: The contents table is completely wrong, suggesting some 50 more pages not existing due to an altered lay-out, there are two chapter X, and many other flaws of this sort, suggesting a lacking proof-reader.
