Should be titled "RxJava Android Essentials", but still relevant

RxJava is a pretty new library and reactive programming altogether is only starting to get noticed. Although challenging to learn, I have found reactive programming to solve many problems I have struggled with, especially when it comes to managing mutability and state. It might sound like a bit of a hyperbole, but it may very well be the future.

Although the concepts of reactive programming were largely realized by the folks at Microsoft and implemented first into .NET, RxJava came about a few years ago when Netflix needed a better means to scale their services. They open-sourced the library on GitHub and it has started to get notice especially after Java 8 came out with lambdas.

That being said, this is a pretty good book if you feel overwhelmed by the online documentation, manifestos, and tutorials out there (I think I have read most of them). However, I was a bit disappointed this book was geared largely towards Android development. As someone primarily interested in JavaFX and BI applications, I found 1/4 of the content Android-specific and irrelevant. But the other 3/4 is relevant to any Java developer. I would have authored the Android stuff in its own chapter, rather than scattering it throughout the book.

Overall, this is a good book to get a grasp on reactive programming with RxJava and getting quick applicable knowledge of the many Observable operations. If you are interested in Java GUI development be sure to check out Tomas Mikula's excellent ReactFX library on GitHub as well.

This book was pretty helpful in getting my feet wet with RxJava

This book was pretty helpful in getting my feet wet with RxJava. It does a pretty good top level overview of the concepts and provides good examples. The Retrofit + Rx chapter was a plus and pretty useful. I feel ready for a more advanced book now. Forgive the typos, typed using a phone.

Don't bother...

This book pretty much just regurgitates what the help docs say online. It's about a 2 hour read cover to cover, and if you found anything confusing while trying to learn RxJava from the online help docs, you will still be confused at the end of this book.

Outstanding!

Kinross has written an outstanding survey of the Ottoman Empire. He traces the history of the Empire starting with its great founder Osman, through its' highest glory at the time of its two greatest sons Mehmed The Conqueror and Suleiman The Magnificant and finally to its fall in the early 20th century. The book evolves around the sultans and thus the story is told mostly as the story of the Empire's rulers and their policies or lack thereof. However, by chosing this approach Kinross has managed to accomplish the monumental task of covering 600 years of history in one extremely interesting volume. It is therefore an excellent introduction to the subject and a good starting point for those interested in the Turkish empire. In many ways this book is similar to Norwich's excellent Byzantine Trilogy and fans of Norwich will also like this book.

Well-written, terribly researched.

This was the first book about Ottoman History I ever read. Having now read litterally hundreds of books about the subject, I re-read Kinross and have some comments:

- Kinross has an engaging style, and this book may ignite an interest in Ottoman history in readers, but only for the EARLY history of the empire, which is clearly where Kinross' interests lie. Even then he doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between history and legend, and a rich and dynamic history is reduced to an Oriental soap opera. His account of the decline is depressing, reflective of Victorian bigotry and bias, and innaccurate and condescending to the point of being mildly insulting.

- Kinross uses NO Ottoman or Turkish sources whatsoever, but then he doesn't really use anything written later than the 19th c.

- He brushes over the 19th c, and subscribes to the 19th c British static view of imperial decay - the Ottomans just sat around declining and having things done to it. In reality, the 19th c is one of the most interesting periods of Ottoman history, wherin the empire was forced to respond to th impact of European capitalism and imperialism. Really dynamic and creative reform programs were instituted with the result that the Ottomans at the turn of the 20th c were incalculably stronger than they were at the turn of the 18th. The Tanzimat is given short shrift as an insincere effort to please the powers and is portrayed as the idea of the British Ambassador (!) and the Hamidiyan era is portrayed as a period of retrenchment, fanaticism, and decadence, when in reality Abdul Hamid, albeit with oppressively autocratic means, enormously modernized the empire and created the school system that educated later reformers including Ataturk. Kinross is totally ignorant of intellectual trends in the Ottoman Empire and their interplay with other Muslim lands and the West.

If this is your first Ottoman history book, I would read it up until the death of Suleyman and then drop it. I am not aware of a more modern and accurate general survey of the same type that is not too dry and academic for the casual reader, but I would highly recommend Selim Deringil's "The Well-Protected Domains" to get a feel of the self-perception of the Ottomans in the late 19th c.

This is book is not only for the C-Suite folks (the top senior executives' titles that start with the letter C, for chief, as in chief executive officer, chief operating officer and chief information officer, etc.). This is a book suitable for anyone who wants guidance through the interview process as a candidate.

Leora Bach provides wonderful insights and practical applications and tips based on her vast experience as an international headhunter (25 years experience, having interviewed more than 20,000 people). This book is a treasured resource that will accompany me throughout my corporate life. I see it as a road map of sorts so I am well prepared as I plot my next move. I especially enjoyed the stories, the calls to action, and the Glasbergen cartoons. This book is a jewel. Here’s to all of us realizing our dreams!

A must read for every job seeker

“Ace your C-Suite Interview” by Leora Bach is a great resource, but not only for the C-Suite executives. Everyone looking for a new position should read this rich and well written book with a touch of personal development, which is a missing element in many similar books. And what’s more, it’s written from the heart, with priceless background information and many valuable tools, exercises, and useful examples (such as common asked interview questions, and how these questions also could be paraphrased, so you know what to expect). They all help tremendously with the preparation process.

When a headhunter tells you about her job that “This is what I love to do most – help people who have lost all hope and given up on themselves, and show them that they can turn their situation around and be better off than before “, one should listen to her words. And when she has 25 years experience that she’s willing to share, it’s a gift.

"Being Asian" is not in itself a subject for fiction, Cynthia Kadohata says in her candid introduction to this anthology that explodes reverential stereotypes about multiculturalism and ethnic identity. Whether the American characters are from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, or Vietnamese families, the focus in these stories is on individual people in all their rage and yearning. There are no sweet self-esteem messages or heroic role models here, but every immigrant kid will recognize the guilt--you never saw so many kinds of guilt--the way ethnic food can choke you, the barriers and nuances of language, the chasm and love between generations. Kadohata's own story is both disturbing and deeply affecting; so is Lan Samantha Chang's "Housepainting," about a Chinese American young woman who tries to rebel against her loving family's expectations for her. Unfortunately, not all the pieces are as good; and the excerpt from Fae Myenne Ng's fine novel Bone (1993) doesn't stand well on its own. Coming from an Asian girl.

American Eyes is a great book. It tells the whole world how it's like for us "Outsiders". The book says many true things about Asian people and how we live and think. I enjoyed the book because it reminded me not too be so obnoxious about having black hair, brown eyes and having parents who are traditional to thier culture. It teaches lessons like its okay not too be a "Blond blue eyed and tall". The story "House Painting" was a story I got addicted to. It told about a sister off at college coming home and the parents being very excited. Over all the book was great. For the children or adults who hate reading long boring stories, "American Eyes" is a book every one could enjoy and surely isn't boring.

A collection of stories that are easy to relate to.

Though the stories like "Blonde" and "Knuckles" read like childish stories, I found the rest of the book to be pretty interesting and easy to relate to. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in my dislike for Asian foods ("Fortune Teller") or my lack of knowledge of my ethnic language ("Summer of My Korean Soldier"). My favorites were "Fortune Teller," "Singing Apples," and "Summer of My Korean Soldier." The references to the different cultures were a learning experience. And the stories don't have happy endings, which is a life lesson in itself.

About the Author

J. Robert Lilly is Regents Professor of Sociology/Criminology and Adjunct Professor of Law at Northern Kentucky University. His research interests include the pattern of capital crimes committed by U.S. soldiers during World War II, the “commercial-corrections complex,” juvenile delinquency, house arrest and electronic monitoring, criminal justice in the People’s Republic of China, the sociology of law, and criminological theory. He has published in Criminology, Crime & Delinquency, Social Problems, Legal Studies Forum, Northern Kentucky Law Review, Journal of Drug Issues, The New Scholar, Adolescence, Qualitative Sociology, Federal Probation, International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice, Justice Quarterly, and The Howard Journal. He has coauthored several articles and book chapters with Richard A. Ball, and he is coauthor of House Arrest and Correctional Policy: Doing Time at Home. In 2003 he published La Face Cachee Des GI’s: Les Viols commis par des soldats amercains en France, en Angleterre et en Allemange pendat la Second Guerre mondial. It was translated into Italian and published (2004) as Stupppi Di Guerra: Le Violenze Commesse Dai Soldati Americani in Gran Bretagna, Francia e Germania 1942–1945. It was published in English in 2007. The latter work is part of his extensive research on patterns of crimes and punishments experienced by U.S. soldiers in WWII in the European Theater of War. The Hidden Face of the Liberators, a made-for-TV documentary by Program 33 (Paris), was broadcast in Switzerland and France in March 2006 and was a finalist at the International Television Festival of Monte Carlo in 2007. He is the past treasurer of the American Society of Criminology. In 1988, he was a visiting professor in the School of Law at Leicester Polytechnic and was a visiting scholar at All Soul’s College in Oxford, England. In 1992, he became a visiting professor at the University of Durham in England. He was co-editor of The Howard Journal of Criminal Justice from 2006-2012.

Francis T. Cullen is Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati, where he also holds a joint appointment in sociology. He received a Ph.D. in sociology and education from Columbia University. Professor Cullen has published over 300 works in the areas of corrections, criminological theory, white-collar crime, public opinion, the measurement of sexual victimization, and the organization of criminological knowledge. His recent works include Challenging Criminological Theory: The Legacy of Ruth Rosner Kornhauser, Sisters in Crime Revisited: Bringing Gender into Criminology (in Honor of Freda Adler), The Oxford Handbook of Criminological Theory, The American Prison: Imagining a Different Future, Reaffirming Rehabilitation (30th Anniversary Edition), and Correctional Theory: Context and Consequences. Professor Cullen is a Past President of the American Society of Criminology and of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In 2010, he received the ASC Edwin H. Sutherland Award.

Richard A. Ball is Professor of Administration of Justice at Penn State—Fayette and former Program Head for Administration of Justice for the 12-campus Commonwealth College of Penn State. He is former Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University, and received his doctorate from Ohio State University in 1965. He has authored several monographs on community power structure and correctional issues and co-edited a monograph and a book on white-collar crime. He has authored or coauthored approximately 100 articles and book chapters, including articles in the American Journal of Corrections, American Sociological Review, The American Sociologist, British Journal of Social Psychiatry, Correctional Psychology, Crime and Delinquency, Criminology, Federal Probation, International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice, International Social Science Review, Journal of Communication, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Psychohistory, Justice Quarterly, Northern Kentucky Law Review, Qualitative Sociology, Rural Sociology, Social Forces, Social Problems, Sociological Focus, Sociological Symposium, Sociology and Social Welfare, Sociology of Work and Occupations, Urban Life, Victimology, and World Futures. He is coauthor of House Arrest and Correctional Policy: Doing Time at Home (1988).

Criminological Theory

A required course that I am glad to take. This text is advanced and I recommend taking lower level sociology courses in criminology before attempting to read this text. Some of the theories will be familiar, but this text takes them and breaks them down even further. Good buy, and great book!

He is not only committed to promoting knowledge about personality types, but is also the creator of ID16, an independent personality typology based on the theory developed by Carl Gustav Jung.
